Rendering thumbnails?

SnowSultanSnowSultan Posts: 3,798

Is there an updated way to render thumbnails for saved items so that accurate materials and lighting appears in the thumbnail? There was a product that did this (at another store) but it hasn't worked since Studio 4.9. I know you can do it the manual way; save out renders at 91x91, rename them and overwrite the old pngs, but that's not going to be an option for dozens or hundreds of files.

Thanks in advance.

There is Thumbnail Mastery. It claims to work in DS 4.10.

There is Super Save, which can save rendered thumbnails and tip files when saving a scene. I know it works in DS 4.10 and DS 4.11 beta.

There is also a sample script in the Daz sample scripts that can render a thumbnail for an item selected in the Content Library. (It renders whatever scene is loaded and makes that the thumbnail for the item selected in the Content Library.) I've never used it on a scene, but it seems that it should work. I guess you would select your saved scene file in the Content Library, while the scene is still loaded, and then run the script. I have used it on saved materials, props, clothing, etc.

Personally, I use Super Save to save scene thumbnails, and it is a super utility.

there is also 'Thumb Render' by D3D at the other store( you can set your own render size and save it as a preset in the GUI)  i think it comes with 2 basic presets, 91 x 91 and 256 x 256, the 256 size also has a suffix ( .Tip) for the render.

a lil bug is the 91 x 91 has the '.duf' suffix, but if you highlight that lil bit of text, hit backspace and that entry goes blank, and the render does not have the suffix.

also has options for overlays as well. i have both Thumbnail Mastery and Thumb Render, and find Thumb Render easier and quicker to set up for a batch( simply drag the presets into the window in the GUI and hit the Render button in the plug-in's GUI, then it will simply chug away and you can go off and do something else while the batch gets cookedsmiley )

Unfortunately that says "Note: Doesn't work in any version from 4.9 and above!"

    Shame, as it looks useful.

As an aside - I don't bother with the 91x91 files - sure it takes a tiny bit longer for the thumbs to load but I've never noticed it.

the 256x256 (or even 300x300 but it'll display as 256x256) files will then work reduced as the small thumb and as the .tip

just name them the same as the name.duf.png (or just name.png) (not name.tip.png) and they'll work for both.

kk, just added the  Thumb  .dll to my DS 4.11 Plug-ins folder and ran a batch of .pngs and .Tip.pngs, works fine  smileysmiley

Thanks for the information and recommendations so far. The free script worked great except it keeps overwriting it's own thumbnail, so that needs to be renamed for each item. I'll keep the others in mind. Thanks again.

oh, cool. Wonder why the store page says otherwise.

Someone should sitemail the vendor to let them know (unless they just can't offer support past 2.9?)

sadly, the vendor has passed away. warning may be because it was never tested in any version later than 4.9 ?

I thought they closed down stores if the vendor can no longer provide product support?

Just as an update to this - I had some store credit at Rendo so I bought the Thumb Renderer mentioned by 3anson and it's working fine in DS 4.12.0.86 (which I believe is the current 'stable' version). This is gonna save me a lot of time.

^incidentally, this isn't a bug but an intended feature - the default thumbs saved by DS also use 'Name.duf.png' - though I believe it's not necessary (I always include it in mine though as I previously just copy-paste the name to the new render).

I'm still interested in Thumbnail Mastery but it'll have to wait until I'm back at work full time.
