Proper way to make eyeliners?

RAMWolffRAMWolff Posts: 10,343

Still adding and subtracting from my Gino set up.  So here is my latest "need to know"

Eyeliner for guys.  I've tried the overlay under iRAY and it's a total no go.  I've had some interesting results to say the least none of which are what I'm going for.  In 3DL it's fairly easy to create a "guy liner" but under iRAY it this mystery to me.  Tried both channels, Diffuse Overlay Color and Diffuse Overlay Weight... nada... If I do a black background with a white for the eyeliner nothing works, if I invert it I get a white mask over the eyes, not what I'm after.  Messed around with the Image Editor, nada.  I HATE LIE but I'm WILLING to try it if it's a sure fire way to go about this but I'll need a proper tutorial like what channel to plug in the eyeliner.  What settings actually work and so forth and so on.   I love iRAY but this sort of thing drives me crazy!

For eyeliner, I use diffuse overlay. If you use a white on black map in the weight channel (white being where the eyeliner will go), you need to go into image editor and make sure that it is set to average and not alpha. That said, it needs to not be a hard, white line. It will look like it. You want it a little more gray than white to get a good blend. If you've got either of my G8 boys (or girls for that matter), you can look at their map setups.

I should also note-- some prefer LIE, some make base maps (which means you have to adjust your translucency and SSS maps as well), some use overlay, you can even do it with a geoshell if you're masochistic. It's whatever you're comfortable with making.I've done all of those methods, and while I hated overlay at first, now it's my absolute favorite.

Personally I loathe LIE and avoid purchasing anything that uses it.

I would also rather use anything other than LIE if it can be helped.

    Pics or it didn't happen.

also make sure the diffuse overlay color effect is "scatter only" or you get ONLY the color and the liner is invisible, as i figured out LOL

I haven't seen it actually specified in the above comments, so I'm going to be a bit redundant for completeness sake:

    1. Put your mask, (white for 100%, black for 0%,) in the Diffuse Overlay Weight image setting. (We also see color pngs with transparency in this one, for the overlay makeups.)
    2. Adjust the value of Diffuse Overlay Weight as needed.
    3. Optional: Put your color image in the Diffuse Overlay Color. (We see this all the time with the overlay makeups.)
    4. Adjust the color value of Diffuse Overlay Color, white or light gray over an image, or the exact color you want without an image.
    5. Set Diffuse Overlay Color Effect to Scatter Only for an opaque overlay. (The other two settings really wash out the color.)
    6. Adjust the Diffuse Overlay Roughness as needed to tone down the gloss.
    7. Diffuse Overlay Weight Squared doesn't appear to make a difference with the above settings, for the eyeliner.

(Not sure if all this is needed for you, RAMWolff, but it's there for future searches, just in case.)

ETA: Added the Diffuse Overlay Color Effect and Diffuse Overlay Weight Squared parameters to the steps.

Tis funny.  I tried that exact set up and I have no eyeliner and have a white mask over the eyes openings, and upper nose.  Wish I would have taken a screen shot.  I did try the Average, Maximum and Alpha settings, all with varying degrees of "NOPE" lol

Thanks so much for the tips and tricks.  I have a very minimal day today at the salon so I'll hit this again when I'm home in a few hours!

When you get back, here is a little something that may help you. First, the image:

And attached, a zip archive with the image used in the Diffuse Overlay Weight setting, plus the Photoshop file with Paths for Right Eye and Left Eye. This was created with the face template in the file, but it's copyrighted, so I've removed it. I suspect you already have the template files on your computer, so you can add it back in, as the background layer, for reference.

    I hope this helps.

AH, I think I know what I was doing wrong.  I'm such a dunce.  The COLOR channel, of course, controls the eyeliner color... DUH!  Someone slap me and call me a dunderhead!
