AMD 12 cores on AM4 platform, 3900x 7nm incoming 7/7/2019, $499.

$499 for 12 cores, a 15% IPC uplift, and only 105W TDP.  3.9 Base clock, 4.6 Boost clock.  The benchmark comparison with the Intel processor wasn't even close.  Significantly better performance vs. the $1100 i9-9920X

Of course, even with the X570 chipset adding another 16 lanes on top of the 24 lanes on the CPU on AM4, it can't match Threadripper's IO.  Ian at Anandtech will be asking AMD about the future for Threadripper during a Q&A later today (they are in Taipei Taiwan at the moment).  There was no mention of Threadripper at the Computex Keynote, although it did show up briefly at the beginning in the AMD intro video.

    12 fast cores on a desktop is fantastic. That's the key. This chip can game, which is something most high core chips are not so great at. With the IPC and frequency, these chips are everything people could have hoped for.

    Though the much rumored 16 core chip was nowhere to be found. Given that the 12 core was given the 3900x title, it looks like it will be the top chip. Unless the 16 core is the 3950x. But I think they would have hinted they had more to come, they didn't.

    I think what happened is that the 16 core chip was simply not going as planned. There have been rumors that it was not reaching high enough clocks and that it was getting hot. While it makes sense a lot of cores would drop the frequency, it doesn't make sense to release a chip with slower clocks for gaming. Either the 16 core got greatly delayed or shelved entirely.

    However, the show was a massive success for AMD. They didn't need a 16 core part...which might also be a reason the 16 cores didn't happen. Not only did they demonstrate performance, but the partnerships with other companies is a vital part of their success. Finally, we are seeing more gaming machines being made with all AMD parts. This is huge. AMD is no longer the cheaper alternative, it appears they have the performance crown as well. This might be one of AMD's most important releases in its history.

    This is pretty exciting. I have been waiting for this day because I have planning on making Ryzen 3000 my next build. And its here. I also play games, so I do want the gaming performance. That makes the choice easy, the 3900x will probably be my next CPU.

    From the article:

    Su did not elaborate on the why the processors went missing from the roadmap, or when the company will bring the next-gen models to market, saying "I don't think that we ever said Threadripper was not going to continue, it somehow took on a life of its own on the internet. You will see more Threadrippers from us. You will definitely see more Threadrippers from us."

    No timeframe though.  Hopefully we hear more soon.

    Sounds like the 3900X is right up your alley!  Have lots of fun with it when it finally arrives!

    I had not heard about heat issues with the Matisse 16 core, but that might make sense.  At the very least, I'd imagine we'll be looking at a higher TDP, and the ES leaks I saw had lower clocks.

    The 16 core chip is coming. This has been explicitly stated by several of the motherboard partners and several news sites say they have off the record confirmation directly from AMD.

    This was not the full product stack announcement for Ryzen 3000 (or Ryzen 2). It was just a tease. Apparently the full announcement is in 2 weeks at E3 on June 10. 

    BTW this was announced at AMD's presentation before Computex started. Computex started on Tues May 28, Taipei local date. So it just started a few hours ago and unless you're there you've seen essentially nothing from the floor yet.

    While I remain very bullish on Ryzen, the Epyc chips could greatly change my day job, I want to warn everyone manufacturer hype and leaks are often OTT. Wait until you see independent reviews of these chips before making your mind up. This is particularly true of these new CPU's as the X570 motherboards are going to be more expensive than people are used to putting a price premium on adapting them. Do not spend a lot of money on something without knowing what you'regetting.

    Apparently there are 16 core Matisse engineering samples floating around at Computex as well.  The 16 core parts just aren't part of the initial 7/7 launch.

    I have friends who are PC techs at engineering and design firms. They have built a lot of TR workstations in the last 2 years. AMD would have to be insane to drop the line.

    Compared to the Xeon's they more directly compete against they're less than half the price, some are a quarter. If Microsoft would get off its rear and fix the thread scheduler so the high thread count CPU's worked properly they would really be a big deal in things like video editing as well.

    But when you consider this info, you can see what I was talking about. This chip was running at just 4.25 ghz, and that was with liquid cooling! So while it will be a huge chip for multithreading, the 12 core clocks faster. It looks to me like the 16 core is just not ready, and that is why AMD did not show it. This was their big debut, it makes no sense not to show the part that so many rumors had people excited for.

    You only get one one shot at a product reveal. E3 may be coming, but with these clocks making the reveal of a 16 core parts isn't that logical. Gamers will not care for it. They will certainly care about the 12 core part, but 4.2 Ghz will not excite any gamer no matter how many cores it has. And while E3 can be more than gaming, it can be pretty focused on it. After all, Entertainment is in the name of the event.

    Maybe the 16 core part can be tweaked, but I have seen leaks that suggest it is giving the engineers a lot of trouble. Not only did they liquid cool this chip, they over Volted it like crazy. That's not really good. Its a long way from release if it is coming. I'm sue the motherboard partners are all over it, but they still have the 12 core part that will use the same boards.

    And the best part of it is that you can upgrade to the new series without buying a new motherboard! This to me, is one of the best things AMD is doing.

    Well it's all good and fine that a 12-core CPU costs $499 but AMD really won't compete until they get the likes of ASUS, Acer, or others manufacturing entry level desktop PCs with their 12-core 3900x for the same price as the entry level 6-core i5 intel based desktop from Acer.

    Maybe. Some MoBo manufacturers are not supporting Ryzen 3000 on X/B 300 or 400 series boards and others are only supporting them on a subset of them.

    You MIGHT be able to put 3 graphics cards in that one... Not full x16 of course, but I'm seeing 8 + 8 + 4 in the specs...

    3 M2 slots.  One of those will support a 22110 card, just in case you wanted one of those NVMe drives with power loss protection.  OK, 99% of people won't care about that, but it's still cool nonetheless.

    OK, most people on desktop systems won't care about TBolt 3, that's more of a laptop + EGPU situation thing, but it's still interesting.  It will soak up one of the PCIe 16 slots slots though, since the other two slots are only x1.  It needs a x4 slot as a minumum.

    MSI is showing a X570 board with 4 full length slots, with a m.2 between them. So it might fit 4 double width cards.

    There are 4 tiers to Ryzen. 3, 5, 7, and 9. Leaks show a 6 core 12 thread part for under $150 which will probably be both cheaper and better performance than most i5s. You can certainly build a cheap PC with that. As for support, ASUS has exactly 30 motherboards coming for Ryzen 3000. I am sure these will run the full spectrum. Other manufacturers are hopping on board. Ryzen has great momentum, the products are catching on and selling better all the time. And thanks to that the board makers are jumping on, too.

    I'm more interested in the 8-core chips. I've got a 12-core Xeon, and its single-core performance bites the bisquit. I bought it because I was still using Firefly in Poser and needed core count above speed, but after migrating to IRay in Studio, and seeing no need to ever go back to a CPU-based renderer, I'm more interested in greater speed in single core workloads, like the rest of Studio is using.

    12 and 16 core CPUs are sexy, but are they worth the price? Between the cost (especially on the Intel side) and the need for reduced core count, I'm just not seeing the need for anything above 8 cores.

    There are plenty of other applications that benefit from extra cores, like video editing. More and more programs are opening up to take advantage of extra cores. This is another effect of Ryzen's growing popularity. Just a few years ago, 4 cores was the high end, so of course many programs evolved to only use 4 cores. But Ryzen changed everything. Now apps are starting to take advantage. As more and more apps do this, it will justify having more cores. But it depends on what you do. Daz might not for now, but maybe a future version will. As scenes get more complex you will need more CPU to drive them.

    The 12 core Ryzen is $500, and will be faster than any similar count Xeon due to IPC and clock speed while costing a whole lot less. These are not your daddy's Xeons!

    That Xeon was $1500 (US). My only lingering concern with Ryzen motherboards is PCIE lanes. Will there be enough to support three or more video cards?

    There are cards with 3 and 4 full length clots announced. If Nvidia's rumored RTX refresh includes PCIE gen4 support then the 40 lanes on X570 will be more than enough. Even at gen 3 bandwidth multiple cards will work just fine even at x1 for rendering. It will just take a few seconds longer for the render to start.
