OK, sorry, I had to do it. With the RDNA giveaway going on here, AMD just announced that their next generation GPU will be using RDNA. What an uncanny coincidence!

The truth is out there.

I feel ashamed that I didn't draw that inference while watching the Keynote.  RDNA lives again!

I was floored. For one, nobody predicted it, there were even "leaks" saying Navi was still GCN. I think AMD must have planted those leaks to throw people off the trail. Its incredible the games that go on behind the scenes. But they call it this? I was laughing like mad.

I wonder what Daz thinks of the name?

Ribosonal DNA is not new, I am pretty sure it predates Runtime DNA since I learnt about it in Biology at Uni back in the 80's

I am pretty sure that Runtime DNA was intentially named that way to invoke rDNA, yes. And I imagine that is also why AMD is using the name.

I just thought it was funny. I guess it wasn't. Sorry.

well to be fair I have issues where people need to explain jokes to me as I take stuff a bit too literally

Looking forward to the new AMD releases.

I think that Daz should take this as a sign that they should add ProRender support!  The Radeon VII is an awesome card for rendering, particularly at it's price point.  16 GB of HBM2 for less than $700-800...

Most people are heavily invested in Iray at this point, but I can still dream!

Technically, I believe the use of the term by AMD was meant to be analogous to recombinant DNA, rather than ribosomal DNA.

tj_1ca9500b, you should know that DAZ3D does not have the ability to unilateral enable Iray support for AMD cards. Iray is an Nvidia product that requires CUDA support. Only Nvidia cards use CUDA. Either AMD would need to obtain a license from their rival Nvidia to use CUDA with their cards and incorporate it (not likely), or Nvidia would need to enable support for AMD's stream processors in Iray (also not likely). The only way DAZ3D could support the use of AMD cards for GPU rendering in DAZ Studio, would be to add a render engine other than Iray that was compatible.

tj_1ca9500b actually refers to ProRender, which is an AMD rendering engine:

For the ignorant like me, how is this gonna influence Daz Studio? xD

It was 37 years ago and I have absolutely no idea except I recall it involved mitochondria I remember that word devil was all very mysterious

Not at all. This tech should be essentially transparent to the end user and it is still AMD so no CUDA so Iray won't work on it.

    But ProRender will.

June 10th. on E3 stream will be when we find out about the RX 5000 series. All they've shown us so far is an AMD RX 5700 GPU beat an NVIDIA RTX 2070 in Strange Brigade. I'm a tad under-whelmed if that's the first card they're playing.

Yes, E3 is going to be big for AMD. But you are right, just beating a 2070 isn't exactly a great achievement unless it's a whole lot cheaper. Unfortunately, rumors have long indicated this is all AMD may do for now. I sure would like to be surprised though. Dropping GCN for RDNA is already a surprise, so maybe they do have something up their sleeve.

The model number is an interesting detail. "5700" would not be the highest SKU. So it would seem they have plans for a 5800 and 5900. Going back to rumors, those higher tiers may not come until 2020. I think that's a bad thing, if true. While AMD is rocking the CPU world now, their GPU division is pretty sad. Nvidia will likely have something by then to place them even farther ahead. Not to mention, Intel will be releasing a GPU in 2020, and nobody knows how capable it will be. So AMD has a pretty large task ahead of them on the GPU side.

    Thanks for the explanation :D
