Why 'My Library'?

I asked this question at another forum, but feel it was not answered with the specificity which my mind requires. Why do some vendors want their product placed in 'My Library' instead of 'My DAZ3D Library'? It seems like every time that is done the content disappears or is fragmented. Why stop using the old tried and true method of placing all required product into 'My DAZ3D Library'? I usually just write off the product as a lesson learned and vow not to buy from that vendor again. This problem does not occur with products that are directed to a 'My DAZ3D' Library' destination. Can anyone explain the thought process behind this abomination?

Thanks ahead for your time and kindness.

Because it used to be called My Library I think.

TBH, I don't use either term. I name my own because I divide up my libraries so I can find stuff more easily and to keep stuff bought from other stores (and my own creations) separate.

So long as you link it in DS, it doesn't matter what the library is called. Don't mess with the folders inside the Library folder though (especially data). That would really screw things up ;).

As AllenArt says, the names are just defaults - they have no functional significance (for properly cosntructed content) and you can use any name for your content directory that you like - as long as Daz Studio and Install Manager know to use that folder.

IIRC in the old days of bitrock installers and such I beleive Daz Studio was set up with 'My DAZ3D Library' for products from DAZ and the 'My Library' was for products from elsewhere that you might install yourself. However, even then you could install 3rd party products to 'My DAZ3D Library'; but i think having the installations seperate was supposed to make it easier to uninstall the third party items.

My Daz 3d Library was introduced as the default location for DIM, /Documents/Daz 3D/Studio/My Library was the DS 4 default, /Documents/Daz 3D/Studio/Content was the DS 3 default.

Is it possible that these artists may also sell their products at other venues and some of those cater to Poser?  DAZ still has \Runtime as a folder due to Poser cross-compatibility.  I used to be a die-hard Poser fanboy, but LAMH and IRAY got me to get serious with DAZ and now I prefer EVERYTHING about DAZ hands down over Poser (I FINALLY got over Poser and don't even have it installed now.)

But yes, the idea was that the My Daz 3D Library would be for content from Daz, My Library for your own content, and you could then have separate content directories for other stores - though of course with the old exP figures (Victoria 4 etc.) all of the expansions had to be in the same content directory; that isn't true for the Genesis figures.

  • Thanks to you all for your interesting viewpoints. I know people get tired of hearing it, but anytime I place my content in 'My Library' (within 'MyDAZ3D Library) it goes haywire, and I'm lucky if I can even find it. I have never placed anything in 'My Library' that I wasn't instructed to. When I open it now, it looks like a messy closet where people stick anything they don't want to ever see again. I'm afraid that's what it has become.

    Again, thanks.

You can create as many libraries as you wish and keeping non DAZ in a separate library not a bad idea

you can just call that one My Library if you want

or do what I do, unzip stuff first and drill down to the folder level with runtime and data etc and copy paste that into the library of your choice

If you have "My Library" as a subfolder in "My DAZ3D Library", I imagine that could cause confusion with the mapping. If you are keeping them separate, better to keep them apart and mapped as two separate libraries. Otherwise if you are looking in a zip that has the "My Library" folder, you can extract everything under that folder into your "My DAZ3D Library" folder if you want it all in one place.

You’re not supposed to put the “My library” folder itself inside “My Daz3D library”, only its content. You need to take what’s inside it and move them directly into My Daz3D library”, so that the folders you have there like Runtime or data are merged with the main ones you have in “My Daz3D library”.

  • Thanks for everyone's time. Looks like the best thing for me to do is ditch my current DS and open a new DS. I have hundreds of products that I would have to go through if I tried to straighten it up. It would take weeks. I am still at a loss to understand how a 'My Library', or for that matter 'My Library2' ever got into my 'My DAZ3D Library'. I just always assumed it came installed that way. The product I am bitching about had definite instructions to put 'People' into 'My Daz3D Library' and then into 'My Library'. This isn't the first product I've bought and then found it useless because they instructed me to install as it's the final destination, 'My Library'. This latest product didn't even mention which 'Runtime in which to place it.

Latest install line from this product:

"- Copy the 'People' folder in the unzipped folder and paste them into your DAZ Library folder.(e.g. C:\Users\Your Username\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library)"

In the first place, the path to the final destination makes no sense, (to me anyway). But as usual, the final destination with this guy is always 'My Library'.

    Thanks for all your help.
    Larry.

    • My Library (User profile, manual install)
    • My DAZ 3D Library (All users, DAZ Install Manager)
    • My Daz Connect Library (User profile, Daz Connect)

When the developpers can't decide how to organize the files... Poser legacy.

e.g. means "for example" - it isn't saying use that path, it's giving it as the default which you would then repalce with the path you use.

  • With all due respect, Steve, this particular vendor said that the problem with his product was that I did not install it exactly as he said. I was  scolded for not 'reading his readme'
Everyone seems to have a method that works for them. Methods I've used for installing for years successfully, seem to not work in many cases. I try when possible to use DIM. Occasionally, even it tells me my account doesn't exist. The customer isn't always wrong. Particularly when rules are changed mid-stride. Daz is not a big offender, other places are horrific in that you never know how it will turn out. I asked here simply hoping for some clarification. Apparently, there is none if you are installing manually. Everyone seems to have different methods of installation.
    Thanks much!

As long as the product is packaged correctly the rule is simple - the Data, Runtime, and any sibling folders in the zip go in one of your content directories.
