Why google's .webp graphic file format?

Is there a reason why almost all DAz vendor graphics are in .webp format, instead of jpg?

They're not, it's CloudFlare that converts them (if your browser supports it - IE does not).

Interesting. Is there any way you know of to stop that conversion and to just get a jpeg?

There have been several threads about it here, search google:  "webp" site:daz3d.com/forums

Thanks. I am not sure your comment is, however, correct. I run Firefox, so I shouldn't be getting webp format. Second, it doesn't happen on all websites. Third, even on DAZ (I've tested it), some picts show up as webp, others as jpegs. Clearly, there's something else going on, but I'll see if I can find the thread you mentioned. Thanks again!

Actually, modzilla is not a webp killa. It's an enabler .... just found that out!

As Taoz said: "search google:  "webp" site:daz3d.com/forums"

You can install some browser addons for downloaders that will intercept the download image request and it will download as their original format instead of webp. I used such a plugin on Chrome until only recently (when I clean installed my computer OS).

The webp format is completely annoying.

In Firefox at least, the way around this is to enter about:config in the URL bar to be taken to the settings page. Then search for image.http.accept and double click the 'value' box, removing the entry for .webp so that it looks like this:

I'm not a firefox user so can't say i've tested it thoroughly other than a quick browse around the Daz3d shop and saving a few images as .jpg

Nothing in that thread worked for me except one thing that broke the next time Firefox updated.

My problem was that Explorer wouldn't show images in webp format. Irfanview can convert webp and Affinity reads them fine so I don't really mnd the format--except for Explorer.

Well, it works in Explorer now and I thought it was a Win update, but it wasn't (I'm still on 1803). I had installed the Google webp codec. I don't remember exactly where I got it, I just googled for it.

Since I use Firefox, webp is saved as webp and that's okay because they show in Explorer and if I need to convert I can easily do it.

Edited to add: I reversed any and all changes I had made in Firefox since they didn't work anyway.

Older versions of FF and older versions of explorer work will. https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/
