MAC BOOK Users - Question

FauvistFauvist Posts: 2,219

I'm going to need to use a laptop for awhile (months).  Does anyone have any experience using DAZ Studio on any model of MAC Book?  I'm not considering rendering Iray on it.  I know the graphics cards in them are not fantastic.  How are they for building scenes, and navigating through the scene with a camera?  Do you find any limitations?

Thanks!

Up until maybe six months ago, I was able to use my 2013 Macbook Pro to design the scenes and such. I never put any textures, applied any makeup or such to characters, just did all the animation and posing, added the locations and such, then transferred it to my PC to render.

I have DS 4.7 installed on a 2012 Macbook with 4GB RAM. I haven't really had any problems creating rather complex scenes with maybe a few characters and instances for plants/vegetation, but if I don't hide them in the viewport it can get a bit laggy. So yeah, it's possible to work with. Granted rendering takes about 6 times longer than on the IMac I normally use.

A current macbook will have much better graphics though nothing nvdia

  • I am using DAZ Studio on a 2016 MacBook Pro 2 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8 GB of memory.  I have no performace complaints other than the lack of an nVidia GPU means that iRay renders go to the CPU and take forever.  Being a 13 inch notebook the screen real estate is limited.  IMO that's a trade off for the portability.  I love my MacBook but would rather do the 3D work on my desktop.  That said, I cannot take my desktop on trips with me and I enjoy the luxury of taking my MacBook to the room of the house that fits my mood.

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro with 8GB of RAM and it works perfectly with Daz. In fact, I much prefer it to my WIndows setup with a 1080ti card. The only issue, as you mentioned, is the rendering. Unless you want to do 3DL, a Mac is next to useless. However, if you just want to create scenes, etc. and do the Iray rendering elsewhere, you should be fine. I just love that trackpad!

Until it died last year, I had one of the final generation 17" MacBook Pros. I liked the screen better than any MacBook since, and even though it was getting long in the tooth technologically, I used it for a lot of my model making and scene composing. Did the job perfectly. I'd hate to be stuck with a smaller screen though, especially not the 13".

I think I teared up a bit after reading this. My 17" was the dog's b*llocks..I loved it dearly. When it died I was devastated to learn they were discontinuing such an amazing piece of hardware. You'd think that for the designer's circle that Apple is supposed to be catering to, they would have continued with it. My 15" is so frustrating. I would like nothing better to use my 17" on the go with the ability to Daz to my heart's content.

I think the idea is to shoot for the best of both worlds. A newest MacBook Pro should work fairly well, but max out the RAM as much as possible. If I were going to a laptop again, I’d also grab a large monitor — you then have a huge screen when at home and a well-functioning laptop when in the field.

Thanks for the important feedback!  How do you feel about the Macbook's screen, as to colour accuracy and absence of anoying aberrations?

See the other laptop thread and Splashtop Streamer and save the components in your laptop and use your desktop instead (if you have one).
