Save and Render Icons

Is it just me - I often mix up the Save icon with the Render icon and there are times when I really don't want to save instead of render and vice-versa. Both are square icons and I use them both a lot but I occasionally end up thumping the desk because I've hit the wrong square icon. I mean, when was the last time anyone save to a floppy disk? Surely there's a better "Save" icon? Is it possible for the user to change the icons?

You can customize your workspace!
I have the save on the left, and the render at the right, and it has never happened to me to confuse them!
On the other hand, sometimes I confuse the render shortcut with the snipping tool xD
I was wondering what kind of configuration OP has. For me the save icon is a little disk icon on the left and render is a big blue button on the right.
As for the floppy disk design, I think we're stuck with it for ever - it's what most people associate with saving data. A tiny CD, thumb drive, LS-120, SD card or anything else wouldn't be as universally recognizable. Young people today know what the icon means even though they may have never even used one.
Yeah, I did customise to separate the icons but I still somehow click the wrong one occasionally. I think thy are probably the two I click on most of all and the shape registers automatically. That's why I'll probably try to figure out how to substitute a different icon image.
I think the big blue button is only there when you are in the render settings pane - at least that's where it is for me. I use the City Limits layout so it might be different, I should check.
It's in Window>Style>Customize Style... I've never used it, but I remember running across it by accident.
Ah thanks - I never noticed that option.
I did change the icon per the above method (thanks again). Now I hope I get used to the new one quickly. :)
Nice. I hope it works out for you
.
You might be better to assign easy shortcuts to the 2 functions. I use the default CTRL+R to render, but I changed the Save shortcut to Q (Quick Save). I tend to use keyboard shortcuts wherever possible and DS is very easy to configure. Just right-click anything in the Customise dialog and choose Change Keyboard shortcut.
I'm glad you've found your way through! :D
Anyway, the save icon is universal by now, and it doesn't refer to floppy disks! A kid said seeing a floppy disk "why have you 3D printed the save icon"? xD
Oddly, for much of my career I worked on Unix servers with mostly keyboard commands so you'd think that I'd be more comfortable with keyboard shortcuts. However, I think I was so happy to finally start using a GUI and mouse that I abandoned the keyboard wherever possible. That's why I still find Blender such a challenge: I would be much better off learning the keyboard shortcuts but I seem to persist with trying to do it the "easy" way with the mouse. Of course, "easy' is not always the case and the keyboard is the better option if only I could change my habits.
