Use one of the dispersive shader presets, if this is Iray, as a starting point. 3delight has an actual volume shader included with DS.
The easiest way is to use a premade Godray prop like https://www.daz3d.com/expanded-godrays-iray Add a bright light at the base where the projector lens would be and you're done.
There's a tutorial by Sickleyield: https://www.deviantart.com/sickleyield/journal/Tutorial-Creating-Dust-And-Atmosphere-in-Iray-522291773
I'm actually doing a render using that tutorial's methods now and I just can't seem to get the 'beams' going though the window although it does make the room look generally hazy / dusty! So that method is very picky about the geometry of the windows, the size of the room, the strength and direction of the light, and so on.
Sickleyield also make a freebie easily converted to iRay that would work better for the OP's use case. It uses a DAZ Studio primitive cone and a transmap using cutout opacity to work (much better suited to a projector's light beam).

I 3delight there is built in or included Uber- Volumetric lighting which works great when combined with spot lights
As for Iray personally I would use Epic Props: Godrays & Volumetric Light for Iray https://www.daz3d.com/epic-props-godrays-volumetric-light-for-iray
best option and works great in animation
