I tried the post denoiser in the 4.11 beta last night and WOW

For the longest time I thought when people were talking about the denoiser in beta I thought they were talking about the current one in 4.10 that you can access with the left-hand menu while rendering... Nope!

I very rarely run renders to completion so I'm used to some grain. I rarely let a render go over 30 minutes. I have an RTX 1070 Max-Q in my laptop and render in 4k. A darkish scene (couple interior lights and a nighttime HDRI) with a G2M and a G8F and basic clothes and some props (no caustics in this scene) would be pretty noisy at 30 minutes of rendering but sharp enough to be fine for my purposes when viewed on a 1080p screen or scaled down to 1080p. I tried that same scene last night and essentially all noise was gone in 4 minutes. FOUR MINUTES!

The early result is kind of blurry but as it goes on to the full time it does sharpen up as the real raytracing fills in the guessed spots but for my purposes the quality was sufficinet in the 10-12 minute range. On a laptop. I'm in love.

I agree, the denoiser is a fabulous feature of 4.11 beta. You can change the Post Denoiser Start Iteration so that the render doesn't start out so blurry. I have mine set to 800 usually. And, you can change that value in the left-hand menu while rendering.

Where is the denoiser option in 4,11 beta version  interface?

    Thanks

It´s under the filter options of the rendering tab if i remember correct.

I´d love to use it more often but as soon as i create a somewhat bigger scene the denoiser crashes my GPU driver every time when it kicks in.

I allready tried all different drivers between 417.x and 419.x but it happens with all of them. I hope they will fix this for the final version of DS 4.11.

@barbult lol I start mine at 25 iterations

@Martial In render settings it's under filtering and you need to click on both "enable" and "post denoiser available" (or the like) to actually use it. Not sure why there are two buttons that need to be pressed.

@MC-P, when I get home today I'll try it out on my 2080TI with a bigger scene and see if the AI denoiser crashes my system as well. It could be a limitation of the technology, but I'm not familar with how it's implemented so it's hard to say.

If there is not enough memory left at the time the denoiser kicks in, it will either crash or won't apply at all. At least that's how I understand it.

It is certainly fabulous for architecture and similar. Organics, especially figures I find it to be of very little help.

If a figure is the main part of the scene this is an issue, if not, then much less so.

The first is to set things up, the second is to tell it to work (and, at least if you are rendering to a window, you can switch that second button on and off to do before/after comparisons while it is rendering - use the collapsed control sub-selection on the left hand edhe of the render window).

I have an old but good scene I want to convert from 3DL materiels & lights to iRay materiels & lights. The materiels were easy enough but to to change the lights?

I'm getting there another way...not a one to one trranslation of the 3DL lights though.

Also should I use this 'Post DeNoiser' at all if I'm using to have 'Environmental Lighting Blur' enabled? And what if under Filtering I have 'Bloom Filter Enable' selected?

So 3 of those 3 enabled? Yes or No? Any 2 of those 3 enabled? Yes or No? Any specific combination with specific range of parameters for those 2 of 3 enabled? Or only just 1 of those 3 enabled at a time?

When I tried the beta, the whole program was glitchy. My cursor kept freezing for a few seconds after every single little thing I did. I have a 1080 ti but only 16G RAM. Am I going to need to get more RAM for the next version of DS?

I've not experienced this, i7 920, 12GB RAM, 750Ti (why yes, I am planning to buy a new PC - how did you guess?)

As I understand it iRay will use the tensor cores in the 20xx cards already. The tensor cores accelerate the AI denoiser so your tests may not find anything.

I have a 980TI (6gb) in my desktop. I have 64gb of ram and dual 8 core Xeons. I've never had the denoiser crash my system. I have had it not engage tho because the scene had dropped to cpu.

I have a 1080ti. I had 16gb RAM until I upgraded to 32 just two weeks ago. I never had an issue with the denoiser when using 16. In fact, I generally had no issues at all with 16gb, but the upgrade allows me to do more multitasking with other apps while Iray renders. Honestly 16gb is totally fine, even when paired with chunky 1080ti. I have seen absolutely no perceptable difference in how stable Daz is with 16 vs 32. I managed to get Iray to drop to CPU mode, but I had two instances of Daz Studio running and both with "larger" scenes. But that is due to VRAM, not RAM.
  • So my question is will 4.11 and the denoiser work with my GTX 1060 6GB card and the 32 gig ram I have in my machine (Note full specs in sig line)?

Sure, why not? Better specs than my gaming laptop and I run DS just fine on it. :) So long as you don't run out of video ram and drop to CPU rendering, the denoiser will work.

Thanks I wasn't sure it seemed like some of the posts in other threads eluded that only to 20 series cards would work with 4.11.

That’s the other way round: you need 4.11 if you have a 20 series card, previous versions of DS can’t use them. But 4.11 can use other cards.

Yes, you DO need the beta....lol. No denoiser in the current release version of Studio ;). But I'm using a 980Ti....denoiser in the beta is working fine for me so long as I have enough vram to do it ;).

Is there any way to tell how much vram the denoiser will need? Like around 10% of your whole scene or something like that.

Right now it´s hard to tell if i have enough ram left to use it.

You can use any GPU monitor to gauge how much VRAM is being used. I use MSI Afterburner, you don't need a MSI card, it works with all brands of GPU and can also monitor CPU use. So you can run a scene, use the denoiser and check, run the same scene again with no denoiser and check.

If I get a chance, I'll try this to see if I can spot any difference. I'm thinking the impact on VRAM is extremely small, but this a good question.

Not the one in DS, but there is a standalone version which should work on a Mac (though not sure if anyone have tested it on a Mac yet, he says he hasn't himself):
