Hair vanishes during some renders.

Sometimes the hair on my characters' heads will become extremely faded in a render, mostly where the hair is supposed to obscure something other than the character's heads. Sometimes stopping the render and starting over fixes it. But for some scenes, the hair fades out like this even after restarting the render.
