Is there a way to...

If you have an object placed exactly where you want it but want to replace it with a different similar object in the exact same location/position, is there an easy way to do this? Thanks.

  • Select that object in the scene, go to the parameters tab and copy down the x, y and z coords.

Remove the old object and add your new object to the scene.

Select that object in the scene and adjust the x, y, z coords to match. It will now be in the same location.

Smarter people than me probably have a way of copying it to the same location via a script but this works for me.

    I hope that helps.

Carrara has a cool function called "Align" (Ctrl + K), which we can align to any of, or all three axis

I have a feeling that DS has a similar command.

To get an answer quicker, maybe change the post name to Is there a way to Align two objects, or How do I Align

The prop was loaded with a pose and I want to use a different prop. There are no XYZ coordinates on it in parameters! I will try the Align tool but I’m not really sure how to use it...  I really wish there was a “replace object” tool. Or maybe there is and I’m missing it?

Unfortunately I have also used the copy from parameters tab, and paste pose option when I've needed to do this. Not aware of a "replace" option.

To use Align in Carrara (in case this info helps) we first select the item that we want to Align to, then we Ctrl Select the item we want to align, then activate Align.

Example: If we want to align Object B to Object A's location, we first select Object A, then Ctrl Select Object B, then Ctrl K

This free tool could help you determine the coordinates: https://www.daz3d.com/position-helper-tool

Every prop should have an XYZ. If you click on it and look under the parameters, can you not see them under general/transforms. It is possible they have been hidden, in which case switch on "Show Hidden Parameters".

To do what you need, click on the destination prop, under the general/transforms, copy those parameters (Ctrl-A to select all, and then right click Copy->Copy Selected Items), then click on the object to be moved, and under the Parameters tab, right click and select Paste->Paste to Selected Item(s)

The XYZ was all at default. Maybe because the prop was posed with the character?  There was no separate pose option for just the prop (a guitar), it posed automatically with the character and had no XYZ info. Weird. Those instructions are great for the future though when a prop actually has XYZ info. I didn’t know you could copy/paste XYZ coordinates! Thanks. I ended up doing it manually which was hard getting into the hands and I didn’t want to change the pose too much because the clothes were already dforced...

Pretty much the same in DS, but using the Align pane and clicking the Apply button one you have set the desired alignment options (presumably centres on X and Z axes and probably no change on Y).

Not every prop will be modelled on the world centre - if one or both is an example of that then copying the translations won't work.

Select the object, save the Pose Preset, add your new object, select it and apply the saved Pose Preset. It will go to the position of the original object.

Edit - I know the Pose Preset is mostly used to pose rigged models into a pose, but it can also be used with props to set them into a pre-determined position within a scene.

Again, this will work only if the items are both modelled at the world centre 9or the same off-centre location).
