Product lights render problem

Hello!

I recently bought the Alligator Turtle: https://www.daz3d.com/alligator-snapping-turtle . I need it for a project, and from what I see, this is the best turtle creature for Daz3D.

The problem is that when I try to render it, the lights aren t the same as the product's gallery. Actually, it's like the textures don t work. It's a pale color render. What do I have to do?

Thank you so much for looking into this!

Probably nothing to do with the lights, more likely it's the materials. Are you rendering in Iray? That turtle was produced just before Iray was added to the (then) latest version of DAZ|Studio, so all the materials will be 3Delight. And IIRC some of the materials for these critters (e.g. eyes, mouth, tongue) are also custom materials, made up from the building blocks of the 3Delight material definition system. These will auto-convert for an Iray render with even less success than the usual 3Delight materials. The only option I can think of is to rebuild the materials in Iray, starting from the texture image files used in the 3Delight materials.

  • Thank you kindly for your answer!

It helps me to know more about this, but unfortunately there s nothing I can do. I don t know how to convert the presets, or to add textures. I will see what I can do..

    Thank you again!!

I don't have that particular product, so I can't promise this will work, but do you happen to have my Altern8 Skin Shader System for Genesis 8 product? If you already have it (I don't recommend going out buying it just for this, in case it wouldn't work with that snapping turtle product), but if you have it already you can try using the Shaders in the "Gens Shaders" folder to convert the Alligator Snapping Turtle's settings.

If you have it, here's what you can try:

Select the turtle in the Scene Tab and select the turtle's surfaces in the Surfaces Tab, then go to the "Gens Shaders" folder for Altern8 for Genesis 8 and apply one of the gens shaders. This will likely turn the turtle a funky ugly pukey pink color. But that's easily fixed - in the surfaces tab just add the turtle's Base Color map to the Translucency Color slot. Do that for all the different surfaces of the turtle. You should then have a converted turtle ready for Iray.

I don't have the snapping turtle product so I couldn't test it on that to see if it will work, but here's what it looks like when I converted the Galapagos Tortoise:

The 3DL mats it loads with:

The mats after converting it with Altern8:

The Galapagos Tortoise didn't have bump maps so I also plugged in the "Base Color" maps into the "Bump Map" slots to give it some bump texture.

Again, I wouldn't recommend going out and buying Altern8 for Genesis 8 just for this, in case it doesn't work. But it's just something you can try if you already have the product. :)
