Horizon Conundrum (Product Request)

Goal: outdoor scene with characters, multiple iray renders at different times of the day.

Horizon options:

HDRI/IBL render presets with horizon (hills/foliage). Problem: rotating sun position moves horizon, which would not be consistent in scene.

HDRI/IBL render presets with no horizon (grey blank).  Problem: can rotate for sun but grey horizon shows in render. Also, no actual horizon.

Sun/Sky render. Same as above.

Ring horizon with photo terrain. Problem: limited product choices available, sun position does not change lighting on photo.

Terrain horizon. Solves lighting issue above, but necessarily huge prop is generally high poly and adding foliage via instancing bogs scene down further.

Solution? Low poly terrain horizons that can mimic distant foliage please and thank you. :)

Flipmode here makes some really intersting products that may work for you.

http://flipmode3d.com/easy-environments/ has a good list and a couple of videos of how all his DAZ products can work together.

Another cheap option is to make a simple horizon .png at the end of your production and place it on a primative plane that is as wide as your scene and just tall enough to fill in any gaps you have to the sky.

But check out Flipmode's products he basically does this.

Have you looked at https://www.daz3d.com/iray-worlds-skydome ? With it you can change the position, colour and intensity of the sun, rotate the skydome, change the sky, horizon and ground (I usuallu use different ground to the ones supplied.) Of course, you should wait until is goes on sale.

There are add ons to Iray Worlds, but the basic product fills most daytime render needs.

How distant? I get a ton of use out of this product https://www.daz3d.com/dry-mud-desert-iray-and-add-ons it's pretty versatile and easy on resources also.

I have taken the mountain textures into photoshop and made a few green vegetation versions along with a couple of winter versions. I can post examples if you want.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, JazzyBear. I do have several of Flipmode's products.

  • I ADORE the mountains in Dry Mud Desert and have kitbashed them multiple ways. Need more like them!
