Character and merchant resource anatomical element question

How important is it to include anatomical elements to textures included with Characters and/or merchant resources?

That question is dependent on the amount of complaints you're willing to endure :D  I know a couple people that do young characters specifically so they *can't* be included. I always include them, but I make sure my characters are a little older looking. Vendors who don't include them haven't seen a noticeable sales hit. Especially with Skin Builder, Zev's got a UV for the females that uses the torso maps for the gens.

For the MR's, you might see more of a hit. There are definitely those that won't buy without them, but I've seen MR's at places that don't even include teeth or mouth maps. The less you are known as a vendor, the less you want to skip out on stuff though.

I wouldn't normally purchase a character without one, but then again I use a 3rd party gens product for my females so it's not needed since they don't use the gens textures anyway. For the males since I use the default gens figure, I won't purchase a character without one. If a character creator isn't interested in including a genitals texture with their character (or including nude promos if they have the option) they should probably look into creating props and environments instead IMO

For an MR, I would say it should be included.

interesting, I didn't know that. Will have to check that out, thanks.

Agreed. To me, it makes the character feel incomplete.

I've bought a few male characters without gens and regret them. I can't use them to render realistic art, so, no, won't buy an adult character without gens.

I do not mind doing the texturing for anatomical elements, but my housemate might think I am looking at porn which is not the case.

Explain her what you're doing. S/he ought to understand that when you create models used by artists, all the anatomy needs to be included and you have to work on it. On top of it, your housemate very likely watch porn in private, like the wide majority of the population.

Count me among the people who normally won't buy a character without genitals. First I do nude/erotic/porn so I need them but even besides that, it irritates me to no end that they aren't included by default. It makes me feel like we're back to the era when statues were mutilated to replace the genitals by leaves. It seems to me antinomic to the concept of art (I don't even consider myself an artist but many do) to not include a body part  because...what...someone might faint? So, I'm likely not to buy a "censored" figure just out of principle.

That said, those of us for whom it matters are much more likely to answer in this thread, so we're probably not a representative sample.

  • I only 'used' male gens a couple of times - I didn't have to - I could easily have simply draped something differently, or shifted the position, as nudity was not necessarily the point - however, I, too would be offended by the idea that a male figure, somehow, should not be intact.  No to digital gelding!  I would be just as offended if female figures didn't have breasts, and that isn't just because I make 'cheesecake' - the human body is not innately distasteful, rude, unseemly or unsightly.  The uses to which it is put to may not be to everyone's preference, but that's life... and a simulacrum of life, in all it's variety and perception, is what art tries to represent.  Huh.  Philosophy... must be bedtime. :-)

As you have never done a character skin before I would suggest that you try making a skin first of all, and see if it is something that you are able to do.   Believe you me it is not easy.  Once you work out whether this is something you can genuinely go on with and make money from  then you can consider the awkward part about trying to do something like this while living under the circumstances that you do..
