I don't need anything

Yes, I constantly con myself into thinking exactly the same. I have everything I need... ooh no, wait I need that. And that. Ooh, why haven't I seen that before?

At least I can now mostly convince myself to buy fewer characters that aren't adding anything much distinctly different to my collection...

Not to wax all philosophical on you, but this hobby is almost entirely one of luxury options. How much luxury do you want/ can you afford? Like the rest, I've struggled with this same notion. The part that really bugs me at times is that I really want the complete set for every figure and often in the fullness of time wind up getting all the bundles and most of the addons for each line of figure. It's an instant gratification market, but I wonder if at least part of the gratification isn't the collecting. Speaking only for me now, I feel like the collecting part is not enough to justify the money. However, if I use the item to make a decent render, then at least in my own mind I have validated the purchase and the value of it becomes somehow more real and tangible to me. In the end it only really matters to me, but any of use could be spending the bucks on a less valid hobby or activity or habit.

It's pitiful really. I end up thinking "Why bother making males at all then?".

Don't say that! They may be listening!

Yeah, I'm still as happily addicted as ever. But this is my "thing"- art and writing. Writing led me here for book covers, and I've been hooked ever since. I don't spend $$$ on expensive clothes for myself, or purses and shoes and what not. I will buy them for my digital Barbies though! I don't think that's going to change. I love 3D art, and I love shopping for it. Now I'm learning to make products too, and it's a huge learning, curve but a lot of fun.

@missuskisses I picked up your beautiful character at Rendo. Congrats on the release. I can't wait to play with her! She really looks great.

Yes, the collecting side of it is fun too! Variety is the spice of life, LOL

And the spice must flow . . .

  • Somethings I buy because they inspire me, some things I buy because it will make the work easier/better, and the rest is because it reasonably matches the storyline for my endless project.  If I am firm with myself, I shouldn't buy much... but I'm weak for the impractical pretties, and I know it.  I read too much Savage Sword of Conan in my youth; women wandering around in elven hooker wear looks natural to me...

That's a good point. For me I don't "need" any of it unless it's for a commision or commercial project, which I then will pay whatever the price is since it gets charged to the client. For personal use I have learned what works for me and what things I want for my images so I am selective in my buying. In the back of my mind though I am very aware that DAZ is a business first and foremost and as with any business no revenue and the doors close. So as much as I like hanging on to my money, I like knowing that the DAZ marketplace is here when I need my 3D items and try to contribute to the revenue stream when I can. Every singe person that works at DAZ and depends on a paycheck to pay their bills and feed their family depends on "us" to buy into what they are selling for that to happen. Me getting pissy about any glitches, issues or lack of any type of content are trivial IMO to the bigger picture and I am thankful to DS and the content I am able to purchase and use.

This hit home for me last year when a pastry shop that I would visit evey other week near my place suddenly was closed. I ran into the owner and asked what happened and he said that no matter what he did they just couldn't generate enough revenue to stay open. I felt bad thinking I could have visited more since they had better patries then any of the other places around and now I am SOL

I've been trying to cut down on how much stuff I buy but not very succesfully. I have reached the point where I look at new items and think, do I already have a lot of similiar things? Do I really need this one? A few weeks ago my internet connection was down for about two weeks so no Daz Store for a while and I managed to make more pictures in that time than I usually do. This should be a lesson for me, but if the new item looks really good I often buy it.

Today looking at the new items the only one I really couldn't resist was the Heilong Outfit and since I had bought some new releases yesterday I only had to pay $3.67 for it! Sometimes you do get lucky smiley

  • It's a pretty outfit... I don't have converters for G8, and I haven't had any luck with running Dforce... so, no luck for me.  I'm mostly down to props, now, for usable new items.  Much as I like to support the companies that support my hobby... things are tight all around, and I don't make money from this :-)  I think I need a power outage just so I stop looking!

Same here! I don't spend money on most anything except for 3D and 2D art things...

Thanks so much for picking her up! I love creating characters, but releasing them, on the other hand, takes so much work that it really makes me appreciate what the PA's do. I've been spending more time with 2D renders rather than 3D things, but I'm constantly thinking about doing more...just need the time, ha. Still have a full-time, non-art job.

Ohhh. I feel your pain there! So many ideas and new things to learn/try/do. So little time. Need several lifetimes at least! Haven't figured out how to clone myself yet either.

I don't technically "need" anything either, and like others have mentioned, I'm picky with what I buy based on how similar it is to other items I have. This is also the reason I put the Medusa Maker and the force Dorothy Outfit into my cart. Both are different (for the outfit I was more interested in the shoes).

...for those who like myself suffer from a debilitating condition like  severe arthritis that makes it nearly impossible to continue in the traditional art mediums, this is the only creative outlet we have left. It is not a "luxury", but the only means those like myself have as a creative outlet which makes our lives bearable..

I'm in exactly the same boat, as, with several medical conditions, I'm not even considered suitable for simple volunteer tasks, excep for watering the gardens around my retirement village.

Apart from using Studio, I watch movies, talk to friends, and for my big event of the week, take the train to church on Sunday mornings.

Studio is not a luxury to me.

I have two dresses for G8F, not skimpy kind, for office scenes and eveyday wear on my wish list and I'm looking for a decent garden tractor/ riding lawn mower.

My deal is scene sets, garages, kitchens, patios, laundry rooms, living rooms, etc I can't take on anymore. I get these things with the intent of wow that would be great in my next render and.....never happens and I find myself using a small set I've put together myself.

Lighting presets are my other weakness but I haven't gotten to the point I'm sick of them beause I'm learning how to use the ones I have.... but the same thing happens with them too I get them the don't use half of them.

It's like buying tools you really want with the intent of using them but they end up on a shelf in the garage still in the orignial boxes LOL!

I think content buying is almost like an addiction LOL!!

...I tend to purchase items that I actually will use directly in my illustration/story work and character design/development as I am on an extremely tight budget.  Hence why I don't buy pro or starter bundles as they tend to have items I don't use, and I rarely even purchase a premade characters (unless they have features I cannot recreate with the morph resources I have or custom morphs/sculpting that works with my ideas).

For having been with this for nearly a dozen years, I have a much smaller collection of content than most here, even some who have been at this for less time than I have.
