Prints of Darkness 3D Printing project - Gremlin Bust STL file is free
Been about 10 years since I did any modeling, but we got a 3D printer during the holiday season and wanted to see if I even still had the basic skillset.
So I downloaded a copy of Sculptris and started playing with a sphere and ran with it. About 2.5 hours later I had an OK model that I thought I could 3D print. There is an issue with the ears mesh being too close together in on area, but other than that I was able to get decent build.
The print is about 5" tall using a .2mm layer height, took bout 4 hours to 3D print. See white goblin head pic.
Since then, I have fixed the ears (I hope) plus added more changes and detail. I never modeled figures/creatures before, but this seems to be coming out pretty nice. The 3 grey pics are the latest changes I added tonight. I have about 4.5 hours total into the modeling so far.
I've never come anywhere NEAR this level/detail of modeling before. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

I know I need a lot ot work on the eye areas, that is really kicking my butt, plus I need to:
1. Detail in the bottom teeth
2. Clean up some other areas a bit
3. Add a more detail. This is where it's going to get tough, figuring out what/where to add because I am light years beyond anything I've ever modelled before.
Cool - looking good so far . I've only been modelling inorganic stuff, but then I don't have a 3D printer (if I did I'd be spending too much time with it lol)
Looks excellent. Congrats on the 3D printer.
Thanks.
Once I get the eyes and teeth done, the next steps are going to probably be adding muscle definintion and blood vessels.
I've never done anything like that so it's going to be interesting. Not sure if the skin surface texturing is going to be worth the effort since the minor details probably won't show up in a 3D print anyway. Unless I make the pretty decently sized, I may have the same issue with the blood vessels. I may wind up doing the vessels mostly on the neck and maybe the sides of the skull.
The 3D printer we have can print up to 410mm (~16 inches) so I COULD print a full figure at a decent size, but that may be just too much anatomy for me to deal with and get right.
I'll probably make this available for free once I am happy with it. It's going to be VERY polygon heavy though since I am using a free sculpting software and I am not sure if it has the tools to reduce the polygon count. Probably should be OK for 3D printing, but not for 2D rendering since it most likely won't be textured and rigged.
Worked on the teeth and eyes some more.
Added a base so maybe it will stand on it's own and a base texture.
Printing...
The "towers" under parts of the model are supports so that the printer can print angles less than 50 degrees. They are built so that they can broken off after the print finishes.
Once I am happy with the print results, I'll swap the with PLA material out for green, double the size (or so) and print at a .05 mm layer resolution to get a final copy.
The last print is probably going to take at least a 1.5 days to complete.
Thanks for sharing the process (and with pics!) - really interesting
I went back thru my saves from when the model first started getting "interesting" and have screen shots of the modelleing proression.
The first pic shows the first and last saved stages. In the last pic, I added a base so that the bust would stand on it's own without toppling over.
Not sure why it changed to wireframe, but it's kind of cool to see the mesh layout.
Pics with the mesh view turned off and some front views.
