Very cool :)
Laurie
This looks genuinely fantastic! Is it modular? And can the ceilings be exchanged for a blank ceiling instead of grate?
Is it Carrara friendly ?
Cooooooool!
Just when I thought I had enough sci-fi corridors in my asset library, this comes along. I really like that you made these corridors tall and curved, which really gives it an ominous feel. I could imagine an alien hiding around a corner or even overhead, ready to pounce down. Many of the exisitng corridors don't give that sense of space. And you didn't mark it up with a bunch of english text/signs: "exit", "level 1" etc., so it can easily be used for alien or human vessel. Really nice job. I could definitely use this.
Thanks everyone. :)
There's more than forty separate pieces in the scene. They could easily be rearranged. The ceiling grate is an integral part of the hallway modules.
Here's a render of two of the modules.
No, sorry. This type of enclosed environment really works best with an unbiased render engine (Iray). It uses mostly emissive lights, and a lot of the resulting illumination comes from light reflecting off surfaces - something that biased render engines (like Carrara) struggle with at times. To match the results seen in the promo renders would require a very complex light rig, and one that wouldn't be very versatile.
I'm a long-time Carrara artist and still a big fan of the program, but for scenes like this Iray makes amazing results so much easier!
Drats, oh well could render the scene in Iray then bring it back into Carrara as a background then set up the figures with a shadow catcher !!!!
This set looks absolutely fantastic! Very cinematic with lots of potential for dramatic encounters, and definitely in my wheelhouse - well done!
Looks awesome, but have to ask, how resource heavy is it? Is it developed with actually adding figures/clothing/hair into it and rendering on a reasonable spec PC?
It's pretty efficient. It uses fifteen 4K textures and six 2K textures. To put that into perspective, the entire scene uses less texture space than a single unclothed figure. If I recall correctly, Victoria 8 uses at least sixteen 4K textures and six 2K textures.
My workstation has two GTX 980 Ti cards (6GB each). Even with multiple clothed figures in the scene I had no problems with running out of VRAM during testing.
Resource efficiency was the top priority when designing this product. A tremendous amount of time went into figuring out the best way to do that. Many different approaches were tried. In fact, I created two other very detailed sci-fi environments prior to this one that I didn't feel comfortable bringing to market because of the amount of texture space they required.
The curved hallway sections are kind of polygon-heavy, they have to be in order to be curved. That isn't an issue for rendering, as the vertices take up very little memory, but it can make scene navigation a little sluggish sometimes. If that becomes a problem, it's easy to solve by hiding some unused sections while working with the scene - you can't see the entire scene at once anyway.
Tim you have done an outstanding job one of the best sci-fi sets I've seen in years all the camera set are supper and the atmosphere wow, so take a bow. And welcome to Daz !
YOINK
And I really really really x9000 appreciate the attention to resource usage. I've bumped into a number of environments and clothes where the texture load is insane. One outfit had 50 or so maps, most at 4k. Man.
So, kudos!
Thanks again everyone! :)
Nice render, Midnight_stories! Those suits look great.
Absolutely gorgeous.
In between other renders, real life and having been sick, I Finally got to play with this one.. and I love it! This was one of the ideas that came to mind when I saw the thread the first time, so decided I should share it here. Thank you Tim for a lovely product!
The Search
The silence was eerie as she continued deeper into the abandoned ship, searching for an artifact that was supposed to be hidden there.
I was going to post a reply the other day and got sidetracked by work. Very cool image, Carola! Thanks for posting it.
PWToon version (although I pushed it toward a little more realism)
Thanks Tim, glad you like it :)
That's a nice render Oso! I feel sorry for the guard/soldier for when those tentacles in the background finds him :)
Hi Tim,
Amazing product! I sent you a PM.
