To bring it back more on topic, at the moment I don't do any commissions because of an issue I had when I first started. Had one guy constantly asking me for free comissions, which at first I was happy to do a couple because he was the first person to interact with me about my art. But they were always different variations on clones, he kept getting more and more complex and wanting more and more. As soon as I decided to start charging for comissions, he vanished completely.
Yes the old "It will be 'free' advertising for you!" ploy. Ask them how that argument would work with a car mechanic. :P I was lucky that even my friends didn't ask for free. At most I gave a couple of them a free headshot they could use as an avatar on forums and such. But they paid for the main image first.
I have a sliding scale. The first time I do a character for someone, there is a "character setup fee". This is because I will allow them to go back and forth tweaking the character to look right. Then I charge seperately for renders. The more complex the image is, the more I will charge. It's simple enough to do a render of a single character in a pose with an HDRI background. But if they want an action sequence, or a specific setting that needs 3D assets, or more than one character interacting together, I'll charge more for the additional setup, test renders, etc. that it requires to make that happen.
