Rendering only part of a set?

I recall reading that there is some way put some sort of plane into a set and then be able to render only parts on one side or ther other of that wall.  Is that possible?

Sounds like you are looking for an Iray Section Plane, which makes everything on one side of it invisible in the Iray render.  Can be a bit tricky to position

That did the trick. Thanks for the reminder. So many features I forget what does what.  Makes rendering in layers easier.
