Sometimes DIM fails but Daz Connect can properly install the product.
I think it's lovely you think so highly of us PA's (we call them for support too) ;D
Matty? I operate a 64 bit Intel Nuc with Windows 10. I download the zip, open it, copy and paste 'Content' into Daz, and put the 'Runtime' for Poser into Poser. It works 99% of the time, but lately? I dunno. Have they changed something that maybe I missed? I just deal with it on a case by case basis. I've been doing this since 2004. Mostly Poser, Bryce, Carrara, and Vue. Daz Studio is fairly new to me. It has one of the less intuitive UI's and there's a fairly steep learning curve. Over the years Daz has made leaps and bounds as far as image quality and lighting. But it comes at a cost. You almost need to take a college course to become fluent with it. Those who started with Daz Studio will poo-poo me, I know. Daz's saving grace is the quality of the finished product. If you can navigate the landmines and hidden foils, it's worth a look. I am not attacking Daz, just giving an honest assessment on my part.
Algovincian, you are spot on about the forums. Most programs would be dead meat without the kind volunteers and admins. I've never questioned their earnestness. Some may get testy if you make a disparaging remark regard their favorite product, but that's natural. It's like telling someone their baby stinks. It never turns out well. Thanks for your reply.
Ah, well, there ya go :D The 'Content' folder is basically the parent and shouldn't go into the library if you're installing manually. Everything in the 'Content' folder should be grabbed and dropped into your base folder for your content library. That's why your morphs weren't working. In your library it was content/data where the morphs need to be in just data/ The 'Content' folder is for DIM/Smart Connect/etc to know that's where the stuff to be installed is. The files above that are basically tracking info for the various apps. Since you're putting the textures in relatively the proper place, that's why things like materials have worked in the past for you.
I started in Poser too, for the same reason :D When Iray came out though, materials and lighting became much more intuitive for me, I figured out how to change and customize the interface, and I like the new tech available. Once I'd gotten my feet wet in Poser, DS made a lot more sense to me as a whole. There are a lot of great tutorials that the Daz folks and some PA's have put up on YouTube and DeviantArt, and I highly recommend them.
Thanks, Changeling, That might be the issue with Daz. With Poser, I've always discarded all but the 'Runtime' when pasting into my Poser Folder. It never occurred to me that Daz would add a 'content' folder just for the heck of it. I must've missed the memo regarding that. Thanks so much for your help. When I feel I've gotten up to speed with Daz, perhaps I'll post a few images. As for tutorials, I've tried to watch a few. They are not for a helpless beginner. They throw about terms I've never heard and I'm like, "Wait....whaa? Then even in full-screen size, they zip the mouse around like a guy scooting around nutshells so you can guess which one the marble is under. I know the people who put the videos together mean well, (Vids take a while to make) but they leave a lot of us scratching our heads. I'd like to see one called 'Lighting for Simpletons. Cuz' apparently I are one.
The Daz Studio content library sits one folder above the runtime folder structure. Instead of doing copy and paste all the time, which seems rather tiedious to me, why not try the method I use. I simply extract the zip file to its own folder, then go in and organize so that the files are how I want them, without touching the Data folder or Textures folder (Geometry of course for Poser) and then simply repack it. The repacked file is then used to install into my content library by telling 7zip that the content library is the new unpack location. I've been around just as long as you have and have used both poser and DS and I can tell you that this method for personal organization works. I could unpack my entire Poser and DS libraries to a new location and the organization would be identical to the current one.
Thanks, Matty! Yet another workaround. There can never be too many. I have used methods similar to yours and they have been successful. What has me SMH is the fact that the product many times will not install as it is packaged by Daz. I mean we as consumers should not have to suffer the tribulations inherent in such a system. But I suppose that's asking a bit much. Thanks for taking the time to reply. All knowledge is good knowledge.
Daz responded to people asking for better ways to isntall - hence Install Manager and Connect, two ways that will (barring the occasional mis-packaging) place the files in exactly the right place.
I can't pretend to understand the difficulties involved. Before I complain about a product I usually can manually find a solution. This is not always the case. Often I just write it off and add another vendor to my 'do not buy' list. Unless I've spent a considerable sum, I have to consider my time as being worth something, and it becomes a matter of diminishing returns.
When you report a malfunction products through the official channels, you help others as well as yourself.
You are absolutely right. As many products as I would have to report, I would be seen as a pest. That's why I try to find workarounds by myself. If it is an expensive item or really important to me, I do come to the forums. The small or cheap stuff? Most often not the hill I choose to die on. It can be seen as selfish, understandably. I have a low tolerance for repetively failed purchases. I don't wish to spend my life complainig. Thanks for your thoughts.
Mod edit to try sorting out the quotes
If Daz support staff really wants to assist those making purchases in the store they'd have a big prominent link on each sales page which says, "Click Here To Ask A Question About This Product". Instead the contact link is in small print way down at the bottom, almost the very last thing on the page. Buyers are looking for the PAs because Daz staff has not made it clear on the sales page that they are ready, willing and able to assist buyers.
And who can blame them really? Daz users on here on the forum seem overwhelmingly intent on rationalizing and making excuses for a mediocre status quo in almost every instance, and this communicates to Daz staff that there's no need to improve anything.
As example, watch what happens next. Someone will read this post and then slam down on the reply button to say that having a prominent "Ask A Question" link on each sales page is an unbearable burden, an impossible task, couldn't possibly happen, a ridiculous idea etc etc etc, even though such a confidence building measure is basically standard practise across the Internet.
What's not being taken in to account are all the shoppers who get confused on the sales page (very easy to do in 3D) and then wander off without making a purchase, perhaps to never be seen again. Daz spends a bundle on advertising, and on coding free software, and then much of that investment gets flushed down the drain for the lack of anyone clearly demonstrating an interest in assisting buyers.
See my sig for further details.
I get typically answers to support queries in 24 hours. How do you know how DAZ is staffed?
@lryhall_17d185bd0d "You are absolutely right. As many products as I would have to report, I would be seen as a pest"
I have 4489 products installed. I have had issues with a product less than 5 times. Perhaps it's not the products.
Jake, I agree it would probably be an improvement, but one unlikely to happen anytime soon. They have much bigger fish to fry and re-coding something that has been avoided for whatever reason, is unlikely to happen. Fortunately, we do have forums that allow us to help ourselves after a fashion. Daz's main goal is to work on improving their platform lest they fall behind in the race. More whistles and bells. We all like shiny things. It's the price we play for progress.
Or available as one of the options (along with the Documentation Centre for product readmes and application documentation and the Knowledge Base for FAQs) via the Help link at the top of the page.
i have over a terabyte of content installed, and i can count on the fingers of one hand the products that have not installed properly. i use DIM and also manually install products.
sorry to say , but your issues are most likely user error, not the fault of the products set-up.
I apologize for the "Quote" issue. As it turns out for me, I can't quote the previous person without including all previous attempts at quoting. Another unmitigated failure. Please bear with me, and I promise not to attempt another quote.
Question,
Considering that the product page is suppose to inform the customer of what the product is and whats included, specifically via the "Details", "What's Included and Features" sections and the promos, what additional information do you feel would be needed?
And this is why Daz handles these types of questions as part of the support for vendors, because generally products work exactly as they should, the products go through vigorous testing and generally work perfectly for thousands of user. An incorrect installation by the user is not a product problem.
Since this topic is becoming increasingly fractious, and most points of view have already been clearly stated, it is being locked.
