I noticed the new products have a utility preset:
- Setup for interior lighting
Does anyone know what this does? I'm guessing it reduces Environment Intensity, or something along those lines.

Yes, but actually the opposite. It increases the intensity so that the HDRI shines through windows etc. more strongly and lights the interiors. I have copied the settings to a folder and increased the icons so you can get an idea of what they do
Ah, interesting! Thank you for the explanation!
Very welcome, I use these a lot. In fact I have all Dimensiontheory's HDR utilities copied into a seperate library folder to be easily accessible so i can use them on other's sets.
I have it too, and it is called "HDR Utilites'. The scene comes in pretty dark and there's options for 'bright, brighter, and brightest'. Then there's an option to reset the scene to make it dark again.. And a ton of options/presets for rotation, tone mapping, white balance. Right now I don't see it in the store. Matter of fact, I can't even find it in my library along with other of his stuff I own. Searching and filter came up with nothing but a couple old 3dl sets.
Here's what I have in my zip, but I can't find it in the store. And it's not the one that has the pasture files in it. It's just a ton of different options.
Actually all those are included in the product metioned by the OP
I'll probably get it since the price is quite nice. I use some of the older iRadiance sets and love them.
I do wish there were a lighting tutorial for them. One where a lighting expert comes in and gives recommendations. I have some opinions but they're only opinions:
- Directional for harsher shadows, more realism, better for outdoor sunny days, etc.
- Use soft for glamour shots, yearbook photo, softer shadows, magazine cover.
- Adjust white balance if x, y, z (who knows? maybe if whites too bright in certain areas use this to unbrighten them)
- Adjust tone in such and such manner if a, b c. (who knows? maybe good for night-time scenes?)
Granted they'd all just be someone else's opinion, but it would be helpful to me.
I feel like there are secrets to lighting I have yet to learn. For example, art has 'rule of thirds' and 'golden ratio'. Knowing these rules allows us to take something as subjective as artistic beauty, and use some patterns that most viewers subconsciously find more pleasing to the eye.
Unfortunately, I've never been able to find something like that for HDR lighting in cg art. I prefer HDR over the three-point and mesh lighting because HDR seems to eliminate much of the 'guesswork' (e.g., how far to place the lighting from the subject), but there's still gotta be some secrets to create a 'better' HDR render.
sorry, I looked and didn't see the one named HDR Utilities.
