Cpu or gpu?

So I'm planning to use my tax return to upgrade my computer, but I'm not sure what to get. As it stands, I have a Ryzen 3 processor and a GTX 1050 GPU. My renders have been taking forever because my 1050 isn't holding up. It keeps switching over to CPU. My question is should I go for a 1080,a powerful processor or do a bit of both. Maybe a 1070 and a Ryzen 5?

  • You would be better off with a better GPU as cpu have little to no effect on Iray renders, I learned this the hard way.

I got a much better cpu and a new 1080 Ti and my old machine beat it hands down becase I had 2X980 Ti.

Well that's my expirience, I ended up getting a 2nd 1080 and that totally half the speed time to render !

  • I was kinda afraid someone would say that, haha. Still, an 8gb gpu is tons better than this 2gb one.

A 2gb GPU is not going to cut it for Iray. Almost anything would be better than that. You want to get the best GPU you can comfortably afford. The rest of the PC is not going to have a huge effect. You could buy a very high core Ryzen which would help a bit, but not like a good GPU. Anything from a 1070 and up would be a huge improvement for you.

But make sure your PC can handle the gpu you want. A 1050 is small and doesn't use much power. More powerful GPUs will use more power and likely be a lot bigger, so your case and power supply need to be up to the task.

I think a 1070ti would be a good fit for you if you are not scared of buying used. I for one am not afraid of buying used GPUs, both my 1080tis were used, as were all the cards I bought previously. Just be smart about who you buy from. You can save a lot if you do it right.

I'm presuming form what you have said that you render in Iray?

If so, get a 10 series or 20 series; I'm not really sold on the 20 series due to it's cost and lack of implemented features. It is good for rendering though.

Get as many CUDA cores and RAM as you can afford on the card; do NOT compare Cuda cores across generations.
