Cloning items

I have the program send in the clones, which used to work well for replicating objects in a scene. But I realized today that I have not used it since I switched from ds3 to ds4. Does anyone know if it still works in ds4? Does anyone know of a way to quickly replicate small items?

Answer : It depends. :) On what your goals are and how much manual effort you want to put into managing the clones.

You can duplicate an object from DS4 using "Edit -> Duplicate -> Node" or "Edit -> Duplicate -> Node Hierarchy". This will create copies of an object (or an object along with anything parented to it in the second case). You will have new full copies that you can move and change as you like.

The other option is to Create -> New Node Instances. This is similar to a duplicate, however the newly created items are clones of the original. They need to share the same surface settings, for example. This method still lets you move the objects around the scene and is lighter on your system since Studio is managing less data than when you're using duplicates.

The drawback to both of these is that it's up to you to relocate the objects yourself. As I recall, Send in the Clones had some ways to automate the scattering of new instances for you. For that sort of thing in the world of DS 4, most people that I know of use Howie Farkes' UltraScatter Pro.

DraagonStorm created a version for DS4 so I'd say the DS3 version doesn't work.

You have 2 options to replicate items in recent version of DS4:

    • "Duplicate" command (in Edit menu) to create an independant copy of the selected node
    • Instancing
