Wrong Way Buttons

Has anyone else noticed that some artists are making the male clothes button the female direction (right to left)?  I was going to buy a couple shirts for my guys until I noticed the buttons were wrong and they look like women's blouses.

Fairly typical problem across the board.

  • Which shirts? The lumberjack one had someone create an alternate version of it with the buttons the other way around.

I've seen various shirts like this. I bought more than one outfit for my guys and discovered after I put on them that the buttons are going the opposite direction.

Well with a lumberjack it might work fine, according to Monty Python. ;)

    Meh, it's just buttons.

  • at least he will be able to make his own sandwiches

  • When buttons were first introduced to clothing, they all, male and female, buttoned the same way.  With the advent of swords as a fashion accessory, buttons for male clothing was switched to the other side because a bunch of uncoordinated idiots kept getting their hilts caught in the gap of the fabric.

Wealthy womens clothing buttons on the left side because they had servants to dress them, and it was easier for the servants to do the buttons up when they wer on the left hand side of the garment (servants right hand)   Maybe some of the Daz male characters also have menservants who dress them.

That's the kindest explanation I've heard for this issue.

  • I always assumed (and I doubt there's any real documentation until after the pattern was established and people started asking why) that men's clothing buttoned that way because it's easier and women's the other way because of course we wouldn't want there to be any possibility of getting the two mixed, would we?

I always figured it was so that men could unbutton them easier.

Yes, at first all buttons were on the same side - the one now used for male shirts. And it wasn't swords that were an "accessory" - it was the buttons, as swords were there long before buttons became common for clothing.

Another explanation for the "male buttoning" is, that in times when most men still wore a dagger at their belt, it usually sat on the left side, so when using a coat with buttons they had to be placed so that one could reach into the coat unhindered.

And for all thinking we aren't still influenced by medieval things just check how males and females take off a T-shirt or sweater and search for the reason on the internet: Hint: it has to do with chainmail
