Render over max time limit still not done? 0%

I have my max render time set to 4 hours. I've used it before successfully with no issue. On the most recent render it was still going at 4 hours 45 minutes and said 0% complete.

I usually do this overnight but decided to run it while I was gone during the day. Once it's going, my computer is unusable until it's done. So I had to cancel it because there was no end in sight.

Is this normal? What did I do wrong to make it go longer than it has in the past?

  • What is in the scene, how is it lit, and is it in an enclosed space (a room, a sky-dome, anythign that blocks distant light)?

It's just two people posed. Nothing else. I've rendered the image about 5 times now. I rendered it again last night and it worked fine. I changed nothing about the render.

That one time just went over the time limit and I couldn't figure out why it did that. I didn't want it to happen again so I thought maybe people knew an easy "oh don't do this" to prevent the problem.

When rendering in Iray, I always set the time to zero, thus taking it out of the equation. One less variable to worry about.

  • Yeah, set the time to 0 (or to some very high number), then stop the render when it looks finished to you.

Neither post answers the OP's question about rendering beyond the time limit. I don't have an answer because I've never had a render continue beyond the time limit. However, being at 0% with 2 figures in 4 hours implies something very wrong with settings or the scene.

I would check the render quality setting. I have read threads where some people set the quality setting very high, eveen though it is effectively a multiplier on render length. The OP may have subdivision set vey high, which could cause the render to drop to CPU.
