how to un-select 'surface selection'

Simple Q. How can I unselect the 'surface selection' option from the tools bar.I clicked on its icon again and it doesn't unselect.  I tried the alt-shift-m also and it didn't anything.

Select one of the other selection tool options, like the arrow cursor icon. You aren't really toggling these on and off, but choosing between the selection methods.
