When you want to make an add-on...

[When you want to make an add-on...] ...is it best manners to ask the person who made the original product, or is it just considered normal to make and submit add-ons for things others have created - Naturally, you're not providing the original mesh or files, just morphs and textures and poses and such, right? So you're not detracting value - you're adding value to the original product.  But what if you make something the original artist had already planned on making?  I notice some artists produce and market their own additional texture packs, for instance.  Is it just "The more the merrier!"?

    Personally I don't feel you need permission, just make sure your addon is all yours and contains no parts of the original. I have seen some free texture addons where the person actualy painted over a copy of the texture that came with the product instead of using the templates and creating their own.

  • I think it’s always courteous - both from a professional standpoint and also personal.

    the original artist might be planning or working on something similar, so asking them at least gives them a chance to either let you know, or discuss, or even help - they may just let you then work on that and they can move onto another addon.

    For me, I don’t see you having much to lose by asking the original creator.

    It would certainly be courteous; it may prevent you from doing work that the original artist had nearly completed.

    It would suggest to others what sort of PA you are going to be. It would get you talking with other PAs.

    I’m pretty sure you are not allowed to take someone else’s texture maps and modify them to sell.

  • That fits better with my sense of what's polite and proper... I just didn't want to seem like a pest if it's one of those things you later learn is Just Not Done.

    Also, this thread is now a little like meeting some Beatles.  I may or may not have fangirled for a few seconds. >.>;;

    So, then, do you just find their profile and send them a PM here?

    That's what I do when I really need to talk to sumbunny.

    Oso, even if you were permitted, it's generally considered slovenly/lazy to do that. Color-shifting a merchant resource is (or used to be) considered the height of bad manners.
