PBR textures from other sources

So I got an email from CGAxis today, 500 seamless PBR textures for $40

A deal I'm thinking of perhaps not passing up. However, Would these work in DS? My thoughts are yes since it has all the maps for each texture. But I would still need to set all the other settings to get it to look right wouldn't I? And since I don't know enough about each of the channel settings, it might be more than I can chew and end up being a waste of money.

Your thoughts and opinions?

  • There are tons of free texture sites out there that you could get textures from and practice/learn with before spending any money on paid ones.

I had a look and I think they should work fine. To use them, load up a similar shader from your daz library (metal, fabric, etc) onto an object Then use the surface settings tab to switch the textures for the relevant channels to the new textures. For Iray you will probably skip the reflection map—just use whatever channels the original preset uses. If you like the result, save it as a new (non-distributable) preset.

It looks like cgaxis has a free sample or two so you can test it out before you buy.

    Thanks both :)

I better hurry though since it's a limited time offer

Keep in mind that seamless textures aren’t going to tile seamlessly on most objects, because that’s dependent on UV map.

It’s seamless purely from the standpoint that the edges match across a flat plane.

This is still very useful, but people often get confused on what to expect.

True, and I do know the difference. But of course when I saw seamless, my mind blocked out UV maps and I immediately though shader instead of texture.

Hmmm, that's interesting because if they are seemless across all 4 edges then it shouldn't matter how those edges are matched up. They should say symmetrically seemless if they aren't really seemless I guess.

Consider a quilt. If I cut it at an angle and flip it and sew it back together, there’s an obvious seam.

The pattern is fine, but where the fabric is laid out is not.

  • you need a seamless projection, which needs a proceedural shader that ignores the UV mapping, I thought you had one actually, I know 3Delight has some and certainly Octane and Carrara

Yes, there are two types of seemless, those you always have to align and those that are procedural.

Did you end up buying and trying these?
