That looks like a problem with what you had selected - the first (the pose) requires soemthing to be selected, and judging by what I can see of the Viewport nothing is selected (then pose won't work properly if the wrong thing is selected either, but it won't throw an error). The second is a Hierarchical Materials preset (to apply to the figure and the eyelashes in one operation) and will throw an error unless the correct figure is selected.
