SOLVED Dumb Question- Black & White disk

I seem to have enabled a weird feature that puts a black and white disk under my selected figure, to show they are 'selected' If I put a second figure in the scene it does not show up until I select that figure.

Can you tell me how to remove it? It is cramping my style
