Digital Painting Renders

Hello friends,

I'm trying to get my renders to the next level by using digital painting techniques. Although it seems an easy thing I don't find anything in the net. I'm not interested in digital painting but just the process applied to the render. I checked out the Shanon MEar channel but tehre's nothing there that I can use for my goals.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

Photoshop, Paintshop Pro or the (free) Gimp all can make renders look like a painting with a little trial and error to get the look you want. I don't have Photoshop, but I have seen nice results with the Gimp.

Dynamic Auto Painter by Mediachance does an awesomely good job

    https://www.mediachance.com/dap/

I only havd the demo myself as don't do a lot of that stuff but if were going to by something to emulate painting that would be it.

Fotosketcher which is free is not too bad

An iPad with Pencil and Procreate can be a great tool in the right hands.
There is also Affinity Photo with some great paint tools https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/

As for techniques there is https://affinityspotlight.com/article/pop-with-colour-portrait-editing-with-elena-paraskeva/

Both of those have some cool options.

There is also a free Topaz Studio with Painting presets available,

but I doubt the images process with it will be sufficient to see as digital painting for everyone.

Below is an example iray render from Daz Studio edited in Topaz Studio with the preset called:

Oil Painting II by Jim LaSala

I have tried several different solutions for creating a realistic looking painting with minimal work.  In my opinion, the Snap Art plugin by Alien Skin produced the best results.

    Normal - Impasto - Oil - Pastel - Comic

These are default settings for each filter, they all have several options to customize

There are other filters included with Snap Art, these are just my favorites.  They offer a 30 day trial version.

I have NEVER found a program that can give me the painted effect I'm satisfied with. I want something that looks more like Luis Royo, Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell. There was one artist, named Toxic Angel that used Poser/Daz Studio to make art that looked very much like the former artists.

However he learned digital painting techniques to do it because he rendered all figures nude and bald, that way he would paint how much (or little) clothing he wanted and could make the hair more believable. I believe his skills have gotten him to the point now where he is able to paint the full figure and only uses Poser/Studio when he needs something quick.

There have been only a few tutorials that teach this stuff and none of them have been listed. They all rely on the render engine or some filter that cannot achieve this look believably. (This is my opinion, there are those that like the effects. But the style they achieve isn't one I care for. Example: Acrylic, watercolor, ect)

Im not sure about this sites link policy to other stores so I'm going to list a few products from Renderosity and you can search there:

    Products by Sveva
    SV Painterly Tutorial
    SV Cloth Painting Tutorial
    SV Blending Tutorial
    SV Postwork - Hair Tutorial

The second set is by artist Amourinette on a site called Gumroad, they are made for overpainting Second Life avatars but the principles will apply to any 3D renders. Just search for Second Life - Painting Course Gumroad and they should pop up.

    Product by Amourinette
Second Life - Painting Course 2 in 1 pack

Lastly, I want to put in links to the artists above so (if you don't know them) you can see what type of art/painting I'm talking about.
WARNING - MAY CONTAIN ARTISTIC NUDITY
    Lewis Royo - http://www.luisroyo.com/en/
Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell - https://www.borisjulie.com/
    Toxic Angel - http://www.toxicangel.com/

    Hope these help! :)

some DAP examples on a fairly nondescript render, an openGL one would even work

Used these kinds of filters on several images in my gallery. PhotoDonut and Nik filters being the two I use most.

Fotosketcher is a free Windows app that is easy to use and has filters that make your renders look like oil paintings, comics, etc.
