Using Iray to texture, do I dump the ROUGHNESS MAP?

Texturing a model.....

It comes with many maps...the Only one I can't find a home for is the Roughness Map.

Is that for a different rendering engine and should I ignore it?

Or is that a synonym (for a different map) and it's important?

Help!

You can use a roughness map instead of a specular map. Just put it in the glossy roughness image slot.

I have a specular map already. So basically, I can just ignore it, then?

    Tehre's two open maps....

    Bump Strength and Displacement Strength....

Any of those two a factor?

    They are currently empty.

Specularity and roughness are not the same thing. The former controls the amount of reflected light, the latter the sharpness of it. (Or, in other terms, the brightness and size of the highlight).

If you have both texture files already, then it doesn't make sense to only use one.

  • I'm confusing myself.

I have a Color map for Diffuse Color.

    Normal for the Normal map

    Spec for Specular

and a ROUGH Map. I have no idea where that goes.

Most likely, "Glossy Roughness", although it does depend rather a lot on where you got the original file. Different rendering engines encode and use the information very differently.

  • Thanks all. That gets me going.

If you are using the metallicity/roughness approach use the roughness map only, remove the specular. If you are using the glossy/specular use only the specular.
