The Last Wave ... Iray - 3DL question

I looked but am never able to find the product thread I'm looking for, so I'm guessing no one has been asking questions about The Last Wave. Has anyone tried converting or using it in 3DL renders?

I'm wondering the same thing. It looks great, but I'm not sure if a Iray to 3Delight shader would work on it or not.

Hmm, no commercial thread as of yet, would need to know what maps are included and how the foam is constructed. One thing's for sure, forget the DS default shader. You will need something with proper absorbtion and/or SSS, maybe translucency maps and whatnot. Pretty sure aweSurface would go a long way.

I would be interested to know as well.

The main issue with 3DL and water is that getting water to look right in 3DL is very much a PITA..  I have tried it and get varying results, but in this case it could be done easily or it might not.. :)

Specifically, I’ve found ‘cloudy water’ next to impossible to pull off well in 3dl.

It’s a prominent item on my ‘frustrations with 3dl’ list.

    AweSurface takes care of that.

I've added aweSurface to my shopping cart. Is it hard to use and will it work in 4.7?

It works in 4.7 no problem. Note it is still under development and and update is in the pipeline;) I have a test thread here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/284366/the-official-awesurface-test-track/p1

Been playing around for a couple of weeks and I have a hard time going back to the vanilla 3DL. Feel free to post questions and discoveries over there! This is kind of brand new to DS users, it's unlocking  many features that have been impossible to access via the current DS implementation of 3Delight. There's also the commercial thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/280441/awe-shading-kit-for-daz-studio-and-3delight-commercial/p1

Here's a quick demonstration of what can be done using scripted pathtracing with aweSurface in 3Delight. I just used an overcast HDRI as a ligh source. (The set is Waves on the Beach by Nerd 3D, not available in the DAZ store anymore)

So I'm pretty sure that Marshian's The Last Wave can be converted to 3DL with some effort;)

Vanilla 3DL?!? lol ... I'm hurt, lol. Actually, very few Iray renders impress me. I'm not sure if it's a case of an inexperienced user I'm looking at or if it's just THAT HARD to use. It has a harshness about it that bothers me ... like it's over exposed or something. Whatever it is, Iray or photo-real has never suited my needs. As it is, I take my 3DL renders and try to mimic traditional art a little. I don't know if you've seen any of my book cover art or not, but 4.7 does what I need it to do most of the time, so I never found the need to upgrade. It does make it heartbreaking when I see new, cool products that don't offer a 3DL version. But if I can find a 3DL shader to modify it with, that's a big help, so thanks for the tip.

laughNothing wrong with shall we say the traditional way of setting up a 3DL scene;) I love the freedom that comes with a biased renderer, and also like to do "not so realistic" renders as well as trying to utilize the full potential of 3DL. It's a good thing to have all those options. And for people (like me) that don't have those nVidia cards, using pathtracing with 3DL renders about 4 times faster than Iray with CPU, and grain is not really an issue.

Someone else mentioned to me in another thread of mine that Iray, and Daz in general, have some crazy-long render times. If it helps, I have found the large, 5000 pixel-wide renders I do for book covers renders faster, over-all, if I pull up the thirds guide and use the spot render tool instead to create pngs I can merge together in Photoshop later. Do you find the same thing?

Looking really close at those renders, I'm really hoping a tutorial organized and broken down for dummies comes with it.

To be honest, all I know about Iray is what I learned from doing a number of testrenders + reading the endless numbers of "my renders are so dark/grainy/slow"-threads. And just to clarify, I'm not blaming the users, I blame DAZ for not providing easily accessable information for new end users. Looking at the whole thing "from the outside" it seems ridiculous IMHO. But it's very good business for nVidia. I do just fine with what I have;)

There is so much I wish I had money for and time to learn how to use it. lol.

  • Yeah, The Last Wave came in after my money ran out.  I will be picking it up in about three months.  Normally I would not have hesitated about buying it.
