RTX 2080TI not being used to render (on beta 4.11)

ParadigmParadigm Posts: 421

Hello,

I got my RTX 2080TI today and was very excited to see the increase in speed compared to by 970 but it will just sit at the "rendering image" dialogue and not ever begin to render if I try to use the GPU. If I include the CPU as a Photoreal device it will eventually begin and the GPU will sit idle. It works fantastically for the display view when I swap to IRAY mode so it's a bit of a headscratcher. NVidia drivers are up to date.

It goes very smoothly with the viewport but does nothing when attempting to render.

    HI

I dabbled a lot with these issues early on , you can check the 4.11 beta thread .  but basicly its a   RAM and/or  to small  virtuel memory pool issue .    basicly try and set your virtuel memory to a large FIXED size .  do not let windows decide this .. I basicly set mine to 40 GB or something similar .. after that it worked just fine .  After this I also increased my RAM to 64 gb and decreased the virtual memory size a bit .. not had a issues after this ,   you will still get this error after xx umber of renders but a  restart of the application then clears the memory .

I would assume this is a beta bug and hopefully it will get fixed but this work around works .. and the 2080 Ti is a beast :-)  I did not have a bad card before  a normal 1080, but the kids wanted a upgrade so I gave them that and spoiled myself to the  2080 ti .. Guess I will have to live on bread for a while but  I dropped my render times with 50% or more -

     best of luck !

Hmmmmm, I wonder why that would be an issue but I can give it a shot. The render worked fine using my 970 so I find it pretty odd that there would be a memory issue now. But I suppose 4.11 could have introduced new issues.

You can try reinstalling the drivers again, sometimes things happen during install. If you can't get it working you contact customer support.

    Hi all,

I posted in the commons for this originally but couldn't resolve it so I thought I'd ask here. My PC is running the beta version of DAZ that supports RTX cards and it can render most scenes very well but this one particular one it will render. Swapping to iray viewport works fine though! My laptop running a 1070 can render the scene fine, albeit slowly. Looking for help debugging this. I make comics and use the same scene for each panel so I can't really just chalk it up to a simple scene issues and move on. Here's the log file:

  • Merged threads and moved to Technical Help, as that was where the new one was posted. You might do better to move this to Daz Studio Discussion, which you can do by editing the opening post.

    Updating...

Completely uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them did not work.

I adjusted my page file to 40GB and that also did not work.

I've tried to reinstall Daz completely and that has also not worked.

Disabling the Architectural Sampler allows it to start rendering, but 100% on the CPU.

    Some additional logs:

  • Can you render a simple sphere primitive with default render settings?

I can do one better, even. (But yes, I can do that)

Here's i13's shower set after about 20 seconds of rendering on my 2080 TI just fine:

  • So, the next step would be to try deleting half the stuff in the problem scene and see if it renders - if it does revert tot he full scene and try deleting the other half. Once you know which half is the issue, try deleting half of that to identify the bad quarter. Keep doing that until you find the trigger item. Of course that assumes it doesn't render both halves fine in isolation, which might sugest a memory issue.

which might sugest a memory issue.

In what way? As I've said, a 1070 can render it fine and has less memory. I suspect it's an issue with some certain shader or something and the beta builds

  • TojiroTojiro Posts: 61

Just throwing my hat in but I'm having the same issues with an RTX 2080 and the 4.11 beta as well.  The GPU is used only occasionally and at odd times.  For example, I'll render one scene and GPU-X will tell me that the GPU is working at full load and it'll render fine, but then I'll render it again later and it'll refuse to use the GPU.  I've tried deleting half the scene but it still runs into the same issue.  I don't think it's maxing out the RAM because it's a pretty sparse scene and it's handled more populated scenes just fine.  Perhaps it's a beta problem..?  frown

Well, that was if you found that reducing the scene to two complementary halves allowed each to render on its own - have you found that to be the case?

I know this is not helpfull but things like this are to be expected when an unsupported card are used. I learned this lesson on the last batch of Nvidia cards when I jumped the gun.

Wait unitl the card is officially supported!

As an added bonus, by the time Daz gets around to include it months have passed and its usually cheeper to buy.

That is true, I had a major panic attack when I put in the RTX but 4.10 wouldn't even render it, lol.

And on a side note, I'm amused to see someone else with the random string of letters and numbers behind their username.  I can't figure out how it got there or how to even get rid of it...

I'm still messing around, but the short of it is no, probably not.

If I delete assets from the scene down to just the environment set and some primitives Im using for lights it still won't render, but if I start a fresh scene and load in said set it renders fine.

So I've found that closing/restarting Daz3D and then doing the rendering leads the GPU to be used everytime now.

Regarding said side note.... Go to your account and select the "Edit" link (next to your name and email address). Just below the field for your last name is the field for your username (which I believe grabs the username from your email and adds said random numbers to it); you can change it in there.

In what way? As I've said, a 1070 can render it fine and has less memory. I suspect it's an issue with some certain shader or something and the beta builds

Well, that was if you found that reducing the scene to two complementary halves allowed each to render on its own - have you found that to be the case?

I'm still messing around, but the short of it is no, probably not.

If I delete assets from the scene down to just the environment set and some primitives Im using for lights it still won't render, but if I start a fresh scene and load in said set it renders fine.

And does the rest of the scene work if you remove the environment and the primitives? The point of my suggestion was to remove items to see which was blocking, if any - to do that you need to remove both items 1 to N/2 and items 1+N/2 to N and see which hald works, then divide the half that doesn't work to spot the quarter that is causing the issue and so on.

I have had one non-repeatable instance where a scene failed in Iray after working for some time. To the point that deleting everything from the scene and then creating a small primitive sphere still failed in Iray. I ended up recreating the scene from scratch - and it worked. And still renders correctly. So if nothing else works . . .

Did you try merging the problem scene into a new scene (or the OP - the thought occured to me reading your post)?

I can invidually render everything in the scene if I make a new scene, but deleting parts from the scene itself down to any single item fails to render with the GPU.

I have not, I can give that a shot tomorrow!

Never thought of it - if I still have the original scene I'll try it.

I tried that and it actually worked! It couldn't be an empty scene, though. I loaded an old project and merged by issue one then deleted all the assets I didn't want and it rendered fine! I had to adjust my render settings, to the merged scene though because it retained the originals. Speaking of which, one difference is that I turned off the Architectual Sampler. I vaguely remember reading about a bug in it right now.

  • Same problem here, a brand new card RTX 2080 windforce and I ray renders result in a blank render.

I hope someone hasa solution for me else I spend 800 euro for nothing :-(

    Very frustrating.

    What is your driver version?

  • Hello there! Would like to add my 2 cents to looks like quite common frustration with the 2080 series. I've got GeForce RTX 2080TI, and updated the driver tonight to the version 417.71. Though as other people mentioned - Daz does not want to render in photoreal using the GPU. In the log file these lines are the one which bother me the most:

Trying to render with CPU disabled in photoreal devices causes infinite looping and no reder being produced. Switching to interactive mode though ( and rendering just using GPU) renders pretty fast. Thought interactive can't be saving me forever.

So is there any advice on this problem? Is 2080ti really unsupported so far? Might updating to 4.11 studio help somehow (using 4.10 pro as of right now)?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Also as additional note - trieda few tests on my other system - exact build, motherboard, cpu, same OS, the only difference: gpu is 1080ti. Render on GPU only - no problem in photoreal. Assuming the problem root is the compatability of 2080ti itself, and not the system.

Any helpful advice on what is the possible fix - is highly appreciated. Also found on forums that other people have been using 2080TIs for some time already without any problem :S quite frustrating dumping so much money for the card which is acting out.....

  • Hate to tripple post, but it looks like I've got the problem solved by upgrading to 4.11 beta. So if anyone still having the same issue with 2080ti being in infinite scene preparation loop trying to render only on GPU - try upgrading to 4.11 - it helped me at least.
