adding cameras (or godrays) to groups changes their behavior?

all right, this is puzzling me.
i often add my cameras to groups to keep them organized. usually it doesn't affect the cameras at all. today, for some reason, adding cameras to a group is changing their angles/framing. any ideas why this might be happening? it doesn't seem to matter whether i'm adding the cameras to an existing group at the base level of the scene, or whether i'm creating a new group with them.
i've also been seeing grouping-related behavior changes with the philosopher's epic godrays as well. adding them to a group seems to turn off the godray effects node. the light planes and dust FX disappear. though my groups are set to be visible.
it there some hidden setting or parameter i can adjust in my base group node to keep this kind of stuff from happening?
thanks!

Hase parent in Place been turned off - at the bottom of the Change Parent dialogue if using that, or in the Scene pane option menu
