Distant shots using HDRi?

Hi -

I'm using Orestes Winter Grove, and trying to get a shot of a vehicle driving toward the viewer from a distance. How can I achieve that? When I pan the camera out, I get to a point where you can see the "cupping" of the HDRi image. So do I leave the camera alone and move the vehicle itself back off of center?

Thank you!

Try zooming the camera from the car being in the distance to when it is close to the camera.

Also if you can see the edge of the HDRI make sure you are in Infinite Dome and not Finite.

Oh, I was in Finite Sphere (default). I'll try Infinite. And does "w/ground" allow one to use DOF? I had bookmarked a great tut on HDRi and somehow lost it.

  • Well, I'm opting for a closer shot. But if I want to use DOF in any scenes, do I need to be using Finite Dome with Ground?

You can't get DOF with an HDRI unless you have a ground plane with geometry. Because the HDRI is the whole dome when DOF is applied it applies it to the ground too and there is no sharp area. I'm not sure if using a Matte Plane would work as it is used to catch shadows on HDRI images to make the likes of walls, trees or buildings look solid and things can then be part hidden behind them.

Thanks for the reply and the video. I'll have a look. In my currently rendering scene, which consists only of a vehicle and driver, I actually just turned on Finite Sphere w/ground, and it seems to be catching shadows, as well as allowing the DOF to effect the objects in the scene as desired. So I'm hoping I can get by with this for the time being, though I will study the video.
