Hi

I'm working on a new site exclusively for Carrara Animators - a place to focus on Carrara's animation tools, dynamics and effects etc and general movie making.

I need a few people to help kick it off by reviewing and making any suggestions they might have for the site so if anyone is interested i'd be very grateful for your support. You can post here or private message me.

Thanks

Some thing I would love to see is non character based animation area. This is what I do in Carrara, and I feel like I'm the only one.
( Maybe I am the only one ;)
I think it would be great for possible users to see that.

I define Animation as "anything that moves"
    - so yes that includes objects, particles, physics, smoke even lipsync.
That should tickle your interest and at this stage you have every opportunity to suggest how those subjects might be presented/covered on the site. I would welcome that, so message me if you want to participate.
    and thanks for your response.
    Cheers

Hello, I would be very happy to take part in this project.
I believe that the users of CARRARA must make so that their software preferred 3D evolves and show to the originators of DAZ that there is a lot of users who count on them in spite of the fact that they are made exceed by others.
The users of CARRARA do not need GENESIS, the Poser characters are perfect and a better interaction between the two would be much more interesting than with Studio which is only one small toy compared to Poser.

I think this is a great idea. An indeed anything Carrara needs to get support from the community. And I for one think anything related to animation is always going to put Carrara in a good light ......just hoping after 8.5 gets out there ---work on a version 9 can start and we can see some true enhancements to the core set of tools instead of such an extended amount of time spent on content delivery.

Carrara and animation is a great thing thing to support indeed. You have my support.

    0oseven---

I think this could be a very helpful site for animators working with carrara. Its not easy doing animation in any program. It takes a lot of effort. And it takes a lot of knowledge.

A website devoted to animation would be focused and directed on one topic. Albeit a big topic. This would IMHO actually help folks. It would make finding animations topics, discussions , learnings so much more easily found and keep people working and involved with animation.

And I know for me ----the dream of actually making some short animation that really looked cool has eluded me. Partly by my skill, partly by my effort, partly by my time allowed to be directed at this endeavor. Having a site wholly about animating in Carrara might be the catalyst to get me focused and energized again to learn, practice and here is a new word --produce.

This might even be a place where Carrara group animation could resurface and be better served for organizing and co-ordinating. Just a thought.

So indeed you have my support----and I wish you speedy development and design.

Thanks for your kind words Rich -

The group collaboration you mentioned is a distinct possibility and could be a wonderful thing.
(by the way -what happened to the "movie project " that was started in the forum a few months ago - did it move somewhere else ?)

Here's an extract from the site which outlines what I think it's all about. and a screenshot of the draft homepage that others can see how the site is shaping up.

    ABOUT CARRATORS

There are so many aspects to Animation that I felt a dedicated site would be a worthwhile thing for Carrara users - novice or expert.
So the idea here is to focus on discussing and learning about Carrara's animation features and making Animated Movies.

Subjects such as modelling or the "perfect still render" are left to other sites and forums.

Dynamics, particles, lights , cameras or anything that moves or changes over time is considered animation as well as,of course, characters , their motions and lipsinc.

Maybe you want to collaborate with others to produce a Movie or just get ongoing help with a project.

I hope you will become a "CarraraTor" and contribute to expanding the knowledge of Carrara, Animation and Movie Making . I'm sure everyone has something to share .

    cheers:-)

The community movie project never did move off to some other location - personally I had some rl things that made my free 3d time contract but as far as I can tell it kind of lost direction. I am hoping maybe having a central place to meet and organize might be helpful to keep things going for that sort of thing. . Its not easy. - trying to get a number of folks to get time, agree to one story and work together. Not so easy but maybe with your site it can be a hub of sorts and an incubus of animation skills and peoples who want to learn and practice.

The good thing is that there seems like 8.5 might be getting some new folks interested in Carrara and maybe with a 9 on the horizon ( no matter how long a horizon) --- there are more folks who might be willing to work together now and in the future . It really is hard for folks to buy in to a community project and work on something that maybe is not their love. ---The ccmp (carrara community movie project) ran into that with story lines and polls and it really takes a great effort to get things going to "please" everyone. The thing is there are some very talented folks still using Carrara ---who definitely could make something work.

In hindsight I think maybe the direction should be ----start with small short stories ---and so no one is stuck with working on something too long they do not like.......to me ----working on just rudimentary animation things would be great as group --"The heavy push" etc things like that. Animations were a group could gather their talents and work on something of short duration but very detailed to allow more folks a chance to practice and learn all the things needed to be done. And build up a core group of animators, modelers, texture/shader makers etc------and maybe building up this way to be able to make a significant short.

I'm looking forward to when we see this sort of discussion on CarraraTors !

You are right of course. Animating is one thing. Making a movie another. And making a movie with collaboration is somethiing else again - more like flying to the Moon !!
At one time they said it couldn't be done.
There are not many people with SciFi Funk's dedication so a group efforts are worth considering and remembering the enthusiasm shown in the beginning for the CCMP I dont think there is a shortage of people who want to get involved. So we CarraraTors have to figure out how to help them achieve the goal.

My time is limited but I like this idea, so count me in to help as I can.

The way I see this is part showcase, part tutorial, part Q&A. Each topic should have a good tagging so users can easily find what they are looking for (i.e., rigging, morph target, physics, etc.) as well as indicating whether a project uses pre-built content and animation or whether it is completely custom made. A bit like DeviantArt, but limited to Carrara animation.

The focus should not be on making a community movie. There could be a directory of other community projects people can join, but those should be operated separately. I have seen many community projects start strong and fade into oblivion, most often because the vision was too grand and resources too limited. This, on the other hand, can start small and improve over time.

Indeed Eric --a community project section should be just a tiny section ---small, in the back almost ----just a spot for being able to organize and use for some projects.
There is so much to do and learn and work on yourself ----that should be the focus. And you are right about momentum with these community project like things ...very very hard to accomplish. It's like climbing mount everest------ its not done by 99.99 percent of all earthlings but somehow some folks get it done. So there is always hope. (And really I think calling it a community project , its a misnomer and even restrictive in some ways ----it would be better to just say a bunch of users who banded together for a short animation project.) Smiles.

I thought at the beginning that this project would make dual employment with “Carraracafe”, but it seems that on this forum, only some people intervene, of which part of employees from DAZ, and which the discussions are made between “specialists”.
Their goal does not seem to make evolve nor to help the members, but to speak only about the evolution of the software.
I use Carrara since nearly 10 years and I still learn from the things today!
It seems that DAZ is directed towards other techniques and we do not have any explanations of all these evolutions, for example “Triax”, “DSON”,…
I count on this new site to learn about this evolution and also to be able to cooperate with others on projects!
If DAZ is still behind this new site, then why not to integrate it in “Carraracafé”?

TriAx is a newer system for DAZ Studio characters, it uses weight mapping (as native Carrara content does) with a separate weight-map for each joint. That is potentially more flexible than the old Poser parametric rigging and so allows for improved content as shown in the Genesis line of figures. It also adds things like GeoGrafting - welding new body parts on to an existing figure so that they work as one, with none of the potential for gaps opening up that was preset with simple conforming - and the ability to expand the repertoire of morphs without needing to run additional utilities or apply special files. DSON is the file format used to store TriAx content.

    Hi,
I don't think DAZ gets at all 'directly involved' with Carrara Cafe... but made it available for the Cafe team to run as they see fit - and it is that team whom gets the info they post from DAZ 3D - I think...

We have a lot to talk about for DSON and Carrara 8.5 and all of the new implementation that's now available to us. DAZ_jared has shown a small example of some of the splendid new documentation that's on it's way - and we will certainly have to explore all of these new possibilities together and forum our findings for others to see. I am just bursting at the seems excited about the world of creation that's open to us. We've always had, to a degree... but using DS and C8.5 Pro versions together should make for a powerful CG suite!

Once I get some time, here... I'll see if I can shoot up a video of some of these possibilities I'm talking about. Many other artists here should really get involved, too... if they enjoy sharing this sort of thing. I am fairly narrow in scope compared to the vastness of Carrara - but it's vastness is what allows my narrow workflow to hit fewer and fewer dead ends! ;)

Thank you Richard and Dartanbeck for these explanations!
It is very technical but I believe that it will be necessary to adapt us!
Questions ? I will still have a lot of it others.
We await your video impatiently and don't forget that you don't have especially like pupils, some specialists in the technique!
    Thank a lot !

When I try and answer a question here, I usually go at it from the perspective that the person asking the question has little to no knowledge of Carrara. If I recognize the person posting and know they have a working knowledge of Carrara, then I may get more technical. I usually include screen shots when I can.

The thing to remember is that the vast majority of people offering help and answering questions here are users just like you. Not DAZ employees. If I don't know an answer, I won't post. If nobody responds, I may post a response and say something along the lines of, "I'm sure somebody knowledgeable will poke their head in here and help you." It's not help per se, but it does keep the thread on the first page.

    EvilProducer,
I enormously make things with Carrara and I think that I control it to 80%.
But sometimes, during the creation of a scene, there are questions that I am posed.
Then, I was registered on Carraracafé but when I see the level of the discussions in progress, I hesitate to put a question which could seem stupid!
I control many functions, but I do not know especially all the technical process which is referred to it.
It is for that I am interested by this new site which takes again all at the beginning.
The tutorials on Internet are often excellent but sometimes a little fast.
I must add that I do not have the practice of the forums, that I speak French, but I start to discover all that…
I thank people like you, take of their time to make evolve the others!
    Thank you.

    Hello DUDU!

I'm never sure of the nationalities of forum members unless they drop hints about where they are from. That's why I try and post screen shots.

Personally, I like it when a seemingly simple question is asked, because even if I don't answer, there's usually a couple different ways to solve the problem, and sometimes I learn something new myself, which is a good thing, because the day you stop learning is the day you are dead. ;-)
