Simple things you can do to put less stress on your PC when adding a lot of things to scenes?

When I just make a porttrait of a character or something similar I have no problem moving around with the camera to check on the details, but when I have two or more characters it starts to get pretty laggy. I recently upgraded my PC which certainly helped but I was wondering if there are other things I can do, such as settings I can make use of to make the process of building my scene smoother before I render it?

There is a setting in preferences that helps smooth out the viewport, but I'm at work and don't currently have access to my Studio install to look it up. I'll try and remember to find it when I get home this evening. Also, remove anything possible from the scene that you won't be using (like extra rooms/furnishings that load with the scene but will be out of the shot and not used). Another thing that I've noticed is some characters are coming with a super high SubD set on them when they load (3 is fairly normal, 4 eats my monster rig for lunch) and they most definitely destroy the viewport's fluidity. They look awesome when rendered, but working with them is a pain. So I go in and lower the SubD back down to a more reasonable level while I'm working, then kick it back up for the render.
If you have a good dedicated card you should check the preferences, if the viewport is hardware accelerated by your card. I think it can be found under edit -> preferences -> interface. Check what is says under hardware settings.
