Building/Buying a PC specifically for Daz3d and Rendering in General

Daz has become a huge part of my workflow and I am getting into other 3D software. I'm looking to upgrade my current computer to handle a better workload. I really only have a surface knowledge about PC's. Once you get past harddrives and RAM, I get lost. I would appreciate any advice on this. And just to reiterate, this computer will be used solely for Daz and other rendering software. I currently have 3D coat.

My budget for the new PC will be about 3-3.5k.

Thanks for your help!

Jake

Honestly, the price increase is because of the newer CPU which you really don't need. I would go down a peg or two and up the amount of DDR myself Stay away from anything overclocked as it will wear out much faster when it comes to CGI. You wiul also need a ton of storage space, either internal or external.

    Thanks Michael!

I went on there and tweaked it out some more. I bumped down to the i7 but increasted to 64GB of DDR and increasted the SSD drive to 1TB.  I actually have a home server that has 6TB of storage but I've tried a couple different times to transfer my DAZ stuff to it and map it back to the DAZ program and I can't get it to work.

...I'd at least opt for W10 Pro as it gives you more control over your system than Home Edition does.

Big memory and high core count is useful only if you intend to multi task or create epic level scenes that will dump from VRAM (or work in Carrara).  If you are looking to primarily use the system only for GPU based rendering in Daz, 32 GB and an 8 core CPU would be more than sufficient and you could several 100$ to maybe even 1,000$. The increase in SSD size is a good idea and you can never have enough storage. I would even consider dual SSDs one for your boot/application drive and the other for your content library drive and saving all downloads from the DIM to a large storage HDD. I'm looking to add a second HDD to my main system just for that alone.

That said, I'd hold off for a bit before clicking the "buy" button, as in about another week (particularly If you are primarily looking at Iray rendering) NVidia will be announcing the release and specs for their new line of consumer/enthusiast GPU cards.  Rumour has it (yeah, I know, I know) that they will be based on the new Truing architecture, and split into two lines, RTX for real time raytracing and the standard GTX for gaming.  According to some reports (yeah, again) the RTX series may likely include Tensor cores like the Titan, Quadro, and Tesla series have which would seriously improve rendering performance and support full AI denoising.

Oh, wow, those computer configurations are impressive. So are the prices. I'd be lucky if I could scrape together $500 for a DAZ Studio PC.

...it would take about four months of my SS benefits to buy one of those rigs.

This is really helpful information! thanks!

I built my own rig with DAZ 3D in mind, however, I went with a 6 core CPU and 16gb memory due to the cost$$  The motherboard is upgradeable to 8 core CPU (at the time running around $1000), 64gb memory, and SLI dual GPUs.  Those upgrades along with one improved GPU would cost me around 2500$ if not more!!.  As time has gone on this year I did spring for the dual SSD - OS on one and DAZ library on the other.  That was a huge improvement.  Will be curious to see how the GPUs play out as about a year ago one GPU with 8gb cost as much as the 8 core CPU i wanted.

I'd really love to know from anyone here their setup/workflow and/or the power necessary for creating 3D content as I also purchased MODO.

  • Wait for the GTX 1180. Unless you have too much money to burn or need it really right now then I'd wait.

...still keeping my old beast that I built 6 years ago alive, Upgraded to a 6 core Xeon and 24 GB memory (most that an X58 MB will support) as well as a Maxwell Titan-X. Installed a couple extra fans to further improve airflow (the case, an old Antec P-193, now has 7, - if I could find another I'd love it as it has a huge 400mm fan on the left panel right where the GPU is).

Have a second slightly newer generation system with a 4GB NVidia GPU and 32 GB of memory (DDR3) for Daz scene assembly and working in Carrara. Still shopping for a good hardwired router to link the two together for Carrara rendering which would give me 20 threads and 56 GB of memory.

    Both are running W7 Pro.

Whoa! a 400mm fan?!? That's epic! Like slappin a box fan to the side of your PC. Here I though I was a big baller with my 200s and 140s, lol.

Personally, I wouldn't stop at a mere 400mm fan. Heck, the GTX-1080ti you're getting is a monster. It's a beast. And it needs SERIOUS cooling. Many would even suggest water cooling, but for me that's not even enough.

    I'm talking serious cooling....

Hook this bad boy up to your rig with some flexible copper pipe and you're good to go.

Only $200-300 at WalMart. You'll thank me later laugh

...until I see my power bill. Also have one 140 and five 200s in a very large case with lots of "breathing room" for the components inside.

  • Thanks for the input guys! I feel like I have a better bead on what I'm after. I'll wait to see what Nividia releases in the next couple weeks and go from there.

Wait until the new GPUs are released.

Then wait longer stlil until driver support is availble for rendering.

... Yes I am serious about waiting.

I waited for the 1080ti to be released. Then decided I could wait longer.

So now I'm waiting for the dirvers to be released for the new series, which is still to be released.

... Although I'd prefer Daz add a system to Studio that supports cards from other manufacturers

How did your new computer work out?

  • What would you have change without the home server?  I was going to buy based on your build if you found it performed as expected and if you could suggest what you would have added on wihtout the server.  How are your render times with this build and are you able to render images with 2-3 characters in a scene?  Thanks for any help you or anyone else could provide.

  • Can someone kindly give me advice on what I should buy? I'm new at this but I love Daz3d studio and art in general but I have an old, outdated laptop which I've sold already. Now I'm looking to buy a PC like also specifically for rendering purposes, I'm looking to created a story but first I need the right PC. I'm looking to spend up to $1500 at the most. Please any advice for beginners? Thanks in advance.
