Running GPU's from 1x slots?

I'm in the middle of adding some new cards into my system and am curious on your thoughts on a potentially silly idea.

If I was to put 4x 1080ti cards into the following slots. (two in 16x, one in 8x, one in 4x) that would still leave me two 1x slots on the board.

I have a couple of spare 980ti cards left over from an old build in theory if I added a them into the 1x slots using the 1x riser cables you get in mining rigs would it render slower due to slower cards sitting in uber slow slots bottlenecking the hell of of things, or would it speed things up due to having access to an extra 5k cores from the 980ti cards?  Or have I missed something and this just would not work?

Thoughts?

    While the trasnfer of data to/from the cards would be slow, the actual rendering in Iray (assuming that's your goal) would probably not show that much effect as it happens inside the card - there isn't the constant back-and-forth there is with a game. Of course you'd need to check your power supply was up to the job and so on, and I believe people with multi-GPU set-ups have found that they need quite a bit of system RAM for the preparation stages at least..

    The original plan was to replace the 980ti with 1080ti cards, but now I'm wondering if it is worth keeping the 980ti cards in the systrem or not... I found something in here about somebody testing a Titan X Pascal in various slots and found that load time was increased by something like 25% when the second card was in a 1x slot, and although it did crimp the render times a bit complares to a 4x slot it was not that major. https://direct.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/175226/effects-of-pci-e-bandwidth-on-load-and-render-times

    Thining about it I remeber noticing an increase in loading times when I moved one of the 980ti cards into a 4x slot when I added the 2nd 1080ti.  I guess the only way to know for sure if to pick up a 1x riser cable and see what happeds to the loading and render times.
