Huge amount of updates in smart content??

Does anyone know why I suddenly have 81 products in my "update" section of Smart Content?? A massive amount of older products too.

I just recently reinstalled DS with the new version 4.10.0.123 via DIM. I'm logged in via DS. And I don't know if it makes a difference, but just a few minutes ago I hit something that stuffed up my layout, and because I hadn't saved that one, I had to try and get it back to my preferred state. I'm wondering if updating DS via DIM (which I don't use, only Smart Content/Connect) has suddenly made all these products needing an "update". No readme's say anything about updates. And some of the products there were the Christmas freebie ones that I don't think ever got (or needed) an update.

So...what the heck did i do??

I did a few weeks again & it was welcome improvements to the meata date, product layout, and fixes for the products themselves.

I use the DIM to install and update DAZ Studio software and plugins only.

All supported licensed products I install directly inside DAZ Studio from the Smart Content tab with Connect.

Therefore I do not think that you did anything wrong.

The general release of DAZ Studio 4.10.0.123 had been introduced on December 8th 2017.

    Speculation:

It could be that some product updates are tied to DAZ Studio releases.

Example: Iray updates sometimes allow new Iray shaders. Products are then updated to include those material presets.

It could be that you got all updates tied to that general release at the same time because you waited several months before installing the latest general release.

-> Can anyone confirm or deny if some product updates are tied to DAZ Studio versions?

  • I had multiple updates in Connect and items listed as new in DIM a week or so back - it probably isn't tied to aDS but may be a server thing, as far as I could tell the DIM downloads were not actually updated.

I noticed absolutely nothing new in the half a dozen products I looked at after downloading the updates.

I was hoping for metadata corrections, etc.  Didn't see any... still entire products in Lost&Found etc.

Did the metadata librarian quit? :)

Beware, some of those updates corrupt the files and the product becomes completely unusable. It is discussed over in the Updated Products thread. I didn't see any actual improvements in any of the products, either. I have no idea why they suddenly appeared in Daz Connect as updates.

Thanks everyone! Whew, glad it's not just me then. I hadn't installed any of the updates on those products, I wanted to wait to see if I'd corrupted my database or something like that. LOL.

@evilded777, seriously that Lost and Found gets me irrationally angry. We were told when the RDNA products came over here that they would ALL be correctly metadata'd once the initial deluge was over - that they were all categorized L&F to save time in getting all the products into the store. Oct 2016 I was told that yes, htey were still working on the metadata for the RDNA items. In August last year I was told they only were only accepting metadata updates on products with a sku AFTER 30000. Continual metadata errors are still happening on new products, from incorrect metadata, to files being categorized as lost and found for no reason whatsoever, to the product image not showing in Smart Content. There are times when the metadata is SO fubar'd, that you really can't tell which file is iray and which isn't.

At this point, I am seriously debating whether Smart Content is worth it, and musing over returning to DIM and manually organizing my content library and giving up on Smart Content altogether. It is a mess. Really.

I was wondering about all that. I let Smart Content update metadata because I use DIM and organize myself in Content Library, so frankly, I don't care what it's doing over in Smart Content. The other day, Studio said that it had 807 metadata updates, and they took FOREVER. It doesn't seem to have affected stuff in Content Library, as far as I can tell, but I have no idea what 807 things got updated.

Products in the "Updates" tab in Smart Content: This means some product files like presets for poses, materials etc are updated.

Metadata updates: This means categorizations, compatibilities or product preview images are updated.

Many possible reasons. One of them could be:

Users observed that product preview images were downloaded as 0 bytes jpg files after some kind of server glitch.

    compare:

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/263816/connect-dim-product-preview-images-downloaded-as-0-bytes-jpg-solved

The web team resolved this a few days ago and on my system about 500 products were properly updated.

But maybe updates different people are observing have a unique cause for everyone depening on the product licenses they own.
