New Rendering Build

So am building a "new" rendering rig from parts I already have and would like to get some Opinions on it. The Intel I7 2600k is kind of my baby. It's Super Cheap and still

CPU: Intel I7 2600K

RAM: 32GB DDR3

Drives: Two Samsung EVO 500GB SSD

MSI MAIN BOARD

GPU's I have a lot of Options

A single GTX 980 Founders Edtition which I can get a second of

Two GTX 780Ti's

A Single GTX 980Ti 6GB

This is just until I can build my Ryzen Machine with the new 2700X

Yeah, the old 2600K is a classic, still have several in service at the house.

The trade - off in GPUs is the amount of VRAM.  If 4GB is enough for your scenes, then dual 980s should be the fastest option.

No, one 980TI and one 980 will be the fastest option.

Right, if that combination is an a available option.

The clock speed of the lowest card will dictate the ti's performance in either case.  So it will end up like having two 980's no?

  • I would suggest substituting a larger, mechanical drive for one of the SSD's, unless they are for RAID. You may find that you will start running out of HD space within a couple of years.

I've never heard that. I've been using mismatched cards for years and never had that kind of slowdown.

I think it depends on whether you'e using both cards to render, or whether it's one card (the ti) to render and the other for just the Viewport and whatever other programs the computer's running.

You can use mismatched cards to render, and Iray will farm out processes to max out speed on both of them. However you're limited by the ram size of the smaller card - the scene has to be able to fit on both cards to use them both. (For example, if one card is 4GB and the other is 6GB, then your scene needs to be under 4GB to be able to use both cards for rendering)
