OT Microsoft is getting ready to replace Windows 10 with the Microsoft Managed Desktop

They will be taking over control with their DaaS by replacing Windows 10 with the Microsoft Managed Desktop. This will be a “desktop-as-a-service” (DaaS) offering. Instead of owning Windows, you’ll “rent” it by the month.

i lock windows and prevent updates until im ready; basically waiting until they've got their act together enough.

Been doing it since w10 appeared.

    I don't rent.

And he caused all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark, and no one might buy or sell, unless he had the mark. (Hyperbole for effect).

Screw that.  I'll switch to Ubuntu (Linux).

This sounds like it's more for very specific business and server needs, not for the average user. Don't think it's time to panic yet.

I was going to say this myself. The articles I read are geared towards support issues with updates to corporations. I would think it's a hard sell for a personal computer user to pay for computer plus a monthly fee to manage their personal machines. Companies only make sense since those desktops can be standardized.

Nice to see a really well-balanced article (/sarcasm). There's no reall information in the oinked article, and nothing in the only source it links to indicates that thie will be mandatory for all users rather than an option for those who want it.

For large businesses, it is smarter to run the computers this way.  But not for individuals.  Will wait and see what other news comes up.  Richard makes a valid point

...true, From what I have been reading over the last several days it is being marketed primarily towards businesses with multiple employees/desktops.  MS makes a majority part of it's revenue on server and business solutions, not individual home PCs.

Doesn't sound like any worry for individual's at this point in time

It better not be for individuals. I'll switch to a Mac before I pay Microsoft to micro manage my computer.

According to the ZDNet article linked within your original link ( https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsofts-got-a-new-plan-for-managing-windows-10-devices-for-a-monthly-fee/ ), it sounds more like it will rent entire devices with a maintenance option to people, not try to replace your personal computer's OS with that of a subscription driven one.

I feel uneasy about the future of Windows in any case. Microsoft can do almost anything they want for too many are too dependent on Windows to just say goodbye.

If that happened, whether I would continue using Daz would pretty much depend on whether I could get it running on Linux.  So I can imagine having to take a hiatus from here :/

  • Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols has never been timid with his opinions.  I've been familiar with him for years.  Microsoft did say that Windows 10 would be the last named version of windows though.  SInce they spent a year giving away Windows 10 it would stand to reason they've found a better way to make money than constantly charging for upgrades.  Generally that is a subscription model, as Adobe did with Creative Cloud.  Hard to say what MS intentions are.  What's being proposed currently is just for businesses though and includes both hardware and O/S.  This may be what it takes to push people on to Linux though.

  • This service will not be for individuals and I'm thinking it will be an option for businesses just like so-called cloud computing.  Data integrity is still a big issue with most companies and I don't think many would be to keen on letting Microsoft essential manage all aspects of DI for them.

I know my company wouldn't, since we are heavily regulated.

Of course it wont be for individuals... Yet.

Companies like subscription services; so I would be surprised if MS didn't try something like it eventually for the consumer.

...all the more I'll keep hanging on to my W7 once it does go beyond businesses.

MS stated in the beginning they would never move W10 to a full subscription service for everyone.  Of course, anyone can fib.

Even though this change from Microsoft is likely going to be for businesses, I would like to see more apps start moving to Linux. Now that Chrome OS is getting Linux app support, there could be a growing user base for Linux apps. I'm already tempted to get a Chrome OS device. Now Google and Nvidia need to bring GeForce to Chrome OS devices so we can convince DAZ to bring their apps to Linux too lol.
