Can you "Propify" a figure? Instancing
Hi all,
I just learned about the technique of instancing things in Daz Studio, but as far as I understand it right now, it doesn't realy help me: if I create an instance of a figure, I can translate, rotate and scale it indipendently of the original. Yet if I start altering the pose or the position of the original, the instance moves with it... Also when I make the original invisible (close the eye next to it in the scene tab) the instance also disappears... That's not what I'm after. Using isnatncing, or using another technique, is there a way to "propify" a figure (with conforming clothing and hair and props) in such a way that the original it was "propified" from can still be manipulated without impacting the instance? The "propified" figure itself may be just that: a virtual prop, a statue if you will that cannot be manipulated other than repositioned or scaled. All moprhs and stuff may be dropped.
Thanks a lot,
Me

Select figure. Edit > Duplicate > Duplicate node hierarchies.
This is heavier than an instance, but useful if you only need a few dupes.
You might want to look at http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/nodes/convert_figure_to_props/start - though note that any such action must break the link with the original, so you won't save anywhere near as many resources as you will with an instance.
Thanks for the replies!!!
I know an instance is the most conomical solution, hence the question if there was a way to break the link to the original pose-wise and visibility wise... Any indication as to how many recources are saved by converting to a prop, compared to leaving it as a full blown figure?

I take it this duplicates the figure as a figure?
Thanks for letting me know,

Yes, but it's quick and easy, especially since it duplicates all parented wardrobe.
And textures consume the most memory when rendering, far more than geometry (unless using 3+ subdivision). I bet 2 shirts sharing the same texture consume less gpu memory than 2 shirts with 2 different textures, in which case duplicating isn't such a bad option when leaving textures the same. I'll have to test it out one day.
Thanks for the replies!
Any idea how much memory I would save if I would duplicate figures and then propify them? (compared to just loading in more figures)
Thanks a lot,

The memory saving would be in working on the scene, the rigging and deforms don't get sent to the render engine, so it depends where you are wanting to save.
If you are using several figures it usually means there is NOT a super closeup so get the Scene Optimizer and kill off a bunch of the MAPs that you do not really need. This help me the most with my limited PC only rendering. https://www.daz3d.com/scene-optimizer
