Jepe's Project Hairy 456 for Daz Studio - Working on it

I am having difficulty with Jepe's Project Hairy 456. The materials for facial hair, tears, sweat, and colors don't show up in the content library. I uninstalled then installed then updated metadata but still they are not there. I checked the DIM for installed files as per instruction of Tech Dept; it showed complete installation of all required files including facial hair, tears, and sweat; but not appearing in the content library. Can anyone help me with this difficulty? Any troubleshooting that I can do to make them appear? Thank you

Hey Solomon, Project M4 Hairy files are Poser files with DAZ Studio companion files - so they show up NOT in you usual DAZ Studio Formats Container, but in the Poser Formats Container. If you don't have that in your Content Library yet, you can add that via the "Edit" menu - Preferences - Content Tab - Content Directory Manager.

Be aware of that Project M4 Hairy files are pre-Iray, shader adjustments might be necessary.

Project Hairy 456 is the updated version for M4, Genesis and Genesis 2 Male. It should show in your usual DAZ Studio Content Library under People - Michael 4 or Genesis or Genesis 2 Male - Materials - Jepe - Project Hairy 456. With 3DL and Iray Presets - make sure you apply them to the geoshell, not to the main character.

Hello Jepe, I was able to locate the files and tried applying them one at a time. I notice that part of the eyes and forehead turn greyish white whenever I apply any material (facial hair, body hair, tears, jewels, etc). Also I am not able to combine them all at once, everytime I apply facial hair and then add tears, the facial hair will disappear and tears will be retained. Am I doing something wrong? BTW your creation is awesome! Thank you for this fabulous work yes

Thank you for your kind words. :)

The correct order for applying Presets from Project Hairy 456 is always body hair first, then facial hair.

If greyish parts appear, try to select the greyish parts with the Surface Selection tool and turn the Cutout Opacity for these back to 0.0 in the Surface Tab. Another option is to switch the not used/greyish parts off in the Parameters Tab (when the Shell is selected you can find the switches in "Shell").

Presets work on one part at a time, when you want to combine facial hair and tears for instance or a wet preset above body hair, apply and use an additional second/third geometry shell with a slightly different offset (Parameters Tab-->General).

So far I was able to follow and apply your instructions. I am now trying to render a scene applying facial hair, body hair, and jewels to Michael 4 in 3Delight, then to Iray. Hopefully my Mac computer can withstand all of these and will not crash on me lol...

Sounds good - let me know about your experiences. :)

Finally, the first 3Delight test render! It took around 28 hours and more for it to be finished. It is one of the longest render I have done so far (never realizing it would take that long). It isn't exactly a complicated scene but the props may have been so much of a challenge to my poor computer lol. I used whimsical pool, heart of the jungle, and lantios daylight. It would probably look better in Iray. There is no postwork but I trimmed the file size because Daz forum is rejecting the original configuration. Anyways,....

Eyes: the opacity strength in both geometry shells were down to 0 so I got it to show up. I decided to apply Jericho's blue eyes, and I like the dramatic effect it did. Intense, dramatic, and fantastical. I guess, I could do better if I adjusted the surfaces.

Nipples: It's missing because I forgot to lower the opacity in both geometry shells.

Chest hair: It appears greyish. I tried changing the opacity but I can't get it to work properly. I wanted a thickly haired chest so i adjusted the opacity up to 100 but the consequence was a greyish hair. I lowered the opacity which resulted to a lowered greyness and less thickness but it isn't what I wanted so I decided on thickness. Postwork can fix it for sure with an extra effort. I don't know how to work this. Any advice?

Hair over jewels: I really like that the jewels are elevated on the skin but I also wanted some hairs to be superimposed on top of it. Maybe 5 - 8 strands of hair over some parts of the jewels would be nice especially on the chest and face. I guess that would be called morphing? I don't know how to do this. Any ideas?

I haven't applied the color materials for the body/face hair yet. I still need to work on tears and wet materials to see what issues may arise. More renders to come (Iray and 3Delight) for Gen2 and Genesis.

Overall, I thought that the jewels and hairs looked impressive on Michael 4.

Thank you. I believe the computer did most of the work lol. I still have many smallish issues to deal with. Any ideas?

  • jepegraphicsjepegraphics Posts: 900

Haha. It depends of course what you mean with "smallish issues" - in general it is always best when you add body hair and jewels and such always when your scene is finished - as the very last steps, a lot of issues can be avoided that way. So have the character ready, skin settings, (head) hair, cothes, environment, lighting all set - then you can add the shells and hair and jewels and whatever and go on with rendering. :)

I see, I applied the jewels and hair materials before loading the environment. I was doing it the other way around. I have some questions though, kinda smallish but would make a difference if I can fix it.

In general - I can only give tips for Iray rendering - I'm not familiar anymore with 3Delight - to get thicker hair and deeper black - you have to do the following - select all the hair material zones in the Surfaces Tab, go to Cutout Opacity, click on the small little wheel on the right for the properties, unhook the limits, say ok and set the Cutout Opacity HIGHER than 100% - 150 to 200 % should give you a blacker, thicker outcome in rendering. This should work in both 3Delight and Iray.

Hair over Jewels - you should always be aware of that the geo shell is only a shell, 2D - not 3D - if you want to have 3D hair, you maybe should look for a fibermesh solution - Real Hairy for G2M (that works also very nice on G3M/G8M) comes to mind, but you can't have it all, some limitations we have to accept unfortunately.

Okay, thank you for the words of wisdom. I shall go ahead and try it on Iray.

Iray vs 3Delight on Michael 4

The difference can be discernable at first glance for the avid 3D artist. It may not be so for an art patron. Realism is obvious in an Iray render (depending on the type of render mode) but not for 3Delight. In any case, the art spectator will be the judge on what appeals to his/her eyesight (which is eventually interpreted in various ways).

Iray: I used Liquid Rust skin and forgot to adjust the setting so it came out like fake skin. I was able to eliminate the greyish color on chest hairs via increasing the Cutout opacity so it came out as desired. I should do more adjustments to the facial hairs to make them more realistic. The lighting used was Lantios daylight, and it needs to be adjusted a little bit more to produce some dramatic effect. Perhaps I can use portrait lights next time or just use the default point and spot lights. I used the goth tears materials and it worked well on the bald head, but it maybe better if there is hair on the head. The gold jewels looks stunning so no complains!

3Delight: The goth tears have white streaks. I am not sure if it is because of lighting or misdjustment in geoshell. The chest hair is obviously out of proportion and the borders are obvious. I adjusted the Cutout opacity to 200%, so I overdid it. Facial hair is optimal and probably don't need much adjustment. I am not sure about the jewels, the shine may be too much in certain areas due to lighting. Overall, it looks like the chest hair messed up the entire render, though in reality it is dense in some men.

I am done with Michael 4 for now. The next character in line is either Michael 6 or Lee 6 (hopefully practice can make a difference if not disappoint).

    3Delight for Lee 6

A 3Delight render on Lee 6 without using the required M4 for Genesis 2 Male UV set. So it is possibly to use hairs and jewels without the required M4 UV maps. It probably does not look as good as when the required UV maps is used. it was also done with lots of adjustments because hairs and jewels are disproportionate to the body. The Viking hair looks good in black though streaks of green may provide extra character. Jewels are colored green just to compliment the snake and surroundings. I believe that I changed the snake lighting model to matte instead of plastic. Overall, it's a nice try. I'm waiting for the Iray render to be finished. Sometimes I am impatient so I may cut it short. Anyways, moving on...

Another 3Delight render for Lee 6

Just trying out a new pose and some additional characters in the same environment and lighting. M4 UV mapped still unused in this render. For some reason (may be due to lighting), the green jewels looks like silver.

Thank you so much, Jepe. Iray is more complicated than 3Delight and the images may take awhile. Anyways, I am really enjoying your creation and will highly recommend it to anyone who is interested.

Lee 6 vs Victoria 6 (3 Delight). Still waiting for the Iray to be cooked lol. I should have set the dimensions and pixels at a low (so that it finishes up as expected).

2nd Iray render. M4 UV maps not applied but I like the jewels extending to the nose. Also, DOF not applied and the lighting/shadows should be adjusted.

Thanks! I am yet to apply/try out these jewels on other characters. I believe I have a couple of days before my 30 day guarantee expires. I don't intend to return it though but initially I was until you helped me figure it out.

You're very welcome, Xyer0. Name's pronounces Jay P. (don't wanted to end with two ee's lol) And I would love to make characters again, but people are not so into quality anymore, they only buy cheap mass ware, no reason for me to jump on that train. ;)

Very nice portrait, Solomon. I would think about some kind of expression and eye positioning next time. :)
