Lytro type images for 3D renderers?

I have just seen an article about the new Lytro camera, and had a look at some of their images - and have been blown away!

These images encode light information to be able to change the focal plane and make subtle angle changes AFTER the image is taken, it really is one of those "see it to believe it" technologies.

And being an ardent 3D user, my first thought was "Wouldn't it be great to be able to RENDER images like that?" I can't see why not - yes, it would take longer to render, but we have powerful machines these days and I believe the processing overhead would be worth it for the end result.

Over to you, Daz, this could be an amazing development. And don't forget to include it in Carrara while your at it!

Neat effect, looks like true 3D without the glasses. To bad it is not view based instead of needing to move the image.
