OT External Hard Drive - Recommendations ?? (Solved)

I am looking to replace my current 1 TB desktop external drive with a 4 TB external  drive to store various data and downloaded files. It will be plugged into my desktop most of the time and doesnot have to be particularly portable. It will however be on most of the tme; so reliability and lifespan with semi-continous runtime is much more important than portability. Does anyone have any recommendations ?

I am currently leaning toward this Western Digital Elements Desktop: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ODEGWN8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

Thanks for any help.

I am going for this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M00UHV8/ref=twister_B07454F4JH?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

and will copy all my movies & TV shows on DVD/BR to them and connect to my Android TV.

Will probably buy a second for my laptop too although I don't have particular need right away.

Western digital drives are fantastic.  Every drive has pros/cons, just have to use your best instincts and experience with previous drives.  Just make sure to partition drives that large.  Enjoy, what ever you decide.

What do you mean by "partition" - splitting it up into smaller (like 2 GB) partitions?

I have a 6TB USB drive running in Windows 7 64bit and did not partition it. Just pick the GPT option (instead of MBR) when you initialize the disk. Can't be a boot drive.

It might not hurt to double check the price with Newegg.  Sometimes they are cheaper than Amazon, but both are usually highly competitive with each other.  Newegg has a reputation for awesome customer service, although I've never had any CS issues, as up to this point the stuff shows up quickly and works on arrival.  Of course, if you are one of those Amazon Prime people, well use your best judgement.

Thanks for the suggestion; but, yes, I am an Amazon Prime member. Plus I have some Amazon credit I got for my birthday.

I have a WD 1TB that I got 10yrs ago and still running strong. They make good drives. I have big internal drives so don't really need externals anymore. I am however looking to get another for backup purposes instead of taking up room on my internals.

Same here. Technically you do partition it though even if you only create one partition that uses all the space.

Thank you all for your input. I have now decided to get the 4TB WD Elements Desktop and have ordered it from Amazon.

    Thanks again

The WD Elements drives are cheaper but also slower than other WD external drives. Will work fine, but in my experience they are noticeably slower.

By the way, I am a fan of WD drives (internal and external) and have quite a few, including an Elements drive. Never had one fail.

Pretty pedantic. Surely you didn't think that was the context of AJ2112's original and my reply.

Some people reading here may not be aware of it, that's why I'm saying it.
