I've already got alternatives if they are too unreasonable. Well actually they already are too unreasonable but the lifetime contract i signed before the merger can't be superceded by them.
We've had DirecTV since 2005 and watched the prices go up. We have the 'XTRA' pack with 220+ channels. We only watch about 20 or so on a regular basis. We don't have any Premium channels like Showtime, HBO, etc. And if we rent a PPV movie, of course our bill is higher. This month it's 'only' $167, but last month we rented a couple movies and it was $182. We also have Netflix, and we spend a lot of time watching that. There's some really good series on there and a few movies. Never had Amazon Prime or Hulu.
And since we don't bundle with DirecTV for our landline phone, our cell phones and whatever else, our internet service with Xfinity is about $97 a month. So you have to give them all your business to get a better deal. Not gonna happen,.
Good news everyone! The AT&T Time Warner merger was approved. I mean since they'll be bigger and more competitive and economies of scale and whatnot, they're bound to pass those savings on to the customers, right? Am I right?
Well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Yes that is between all devises within the house. If one dvr is recording 4 programs all the other people in the house can't record anything and they have to watch whenever is being recorded on the main. We found that out the hard way and called and told them they can stuff there service. They told us something completely different when we signed up so we got out of the contract after only 1 week of service. Like I said our current cable service allows each of us to record 2 separate programs at the same time across all the dvrs'. So all four of us can record something different at the same time with no ill effects.
Well a Time-Warner Cable lifetime contract is the contract that is keeping Spectrum from succeeding in keeping Sprectrum from sticking it to me so I'm dubious that whatever is left of Time-Warner that is being sold to AT&T is actually a good for the customers when AT&T has it and raises prices to pay for their overpayment well beyond what those products are worth. AT&T is basically bad service with various regional market monopolies keeping them afloat. They've nearly went under a couple of times but a name as well known as AT&T is what bails them out after their repeated bad business moves.
AT&T is horrible service. My MIL had them and ended up dumping them and going with a prepaid dongle. I had them when I lived in Texas and I was on the phone with them at least once a week because of problems with their service. My parents have Time Warner and complain about the equipment and constant outages.
It depends entirely where you live.
Can you get enough TV over the air with an antenna? If you can get your local channels over the air for NFL games, this would be ideal. Most streaming options do not offer local channels, and if they do, the local channels usually cost extra.
What internet options do you have? Is it fast enough to stream all the time? More importantly, do you have a data cap? Net Neutrality officially died a few days ago, so you may have data caps now that ISPs can do whatever they please. Some places already had data caps. Streaming will eat up a data cap real quick. And it is also possible that big cable will do everything in their power to keep you connected in the absence of NN. They already were. The ATT deal doesn't just eat up Time Warner Cable, it also adds a TON of media content. That is the real reason behind this merger. Time Warner owns the rights to all kinds of things, they own HBO, so every single HBO show is now owned by ATT, like Game of Thrones. Will ATT make HBO Go exclusive to ATT services??? They can totally do that now if they want to. Time Warner also owns CNN and TBS. TBS has all kinds of sports contracts. The list just goes on and on. ATT is a media empire now. And now Comcast wants to buy Fox. That is terrifying. Its funny how they have $85 billion in cash ready to buy Fox. They always complain about the high cost of upgrading their networks and "regulations" and yet they have billions sitting in the bank so they can buy up other companies. I'm wondering if they will split the internet up the same way they do cable now that NN is dead. Would you pay extra for an internet package that lets you access the Daz store? Fun times are ahead. /rant
Anyway...
Sling TV is kind of neat, it has a variety of live channels and even some sports channels. You can pay extra for local channels if you cannot get locals over the air.
If your TV doesn't have streaming apps, there's a ton of streaming boxes out there. Just make sure you get one that covers the apps you want. Alternatively, you could also hook a PC up to a TV and enjoy everything from that. No apps needed if you can simply look the site up on PC. You can also use pretty any gaming console. The Xbox One S and X both can play 4K blurays and stream all the things. The Xbox also has HDMI pass through, turning any TV into a smart TV. Its actually a pretty nice media option.
If you have a smartphone, you can link many apps on TV to it, including those on Xbox. Like Youtube. So you can look up a video on your phone and cast it to the TV. That is a really handy feature as it often easier to navigate videos on your phone since you have the touchscreen with a keyboard. But you can hook a keyboard up to many smart TVs these days, and even mice. You can also use a keyboard on Xbox as well for typing text, but not a mouse at this time. Or again, just use a PC on the TV like the cool kids do. I use a PC on my TV.
Rofl ! Absolutely agree, new technology, 40 year old reruns.
...the issue with over the air television today is everything is now digital. So, if there is a momentary drop in signal strength, the entire image pixellates or the screen goes black for a few moments which can become highly annoying. At least in the analogue days even if there was a bit of "snow" now and then, you still had a constant picture.
I'd have to agree, I'm constantly getting signal loss with all electronics, while on the phone, hello, hello ? specially during football games, missing the best play of the game, cause cable tv freezes up. Technology is suppose to advance make like easier, to me only made life more stressful. What gets me most is, while conversating on cell phone, freaking phone decides to update, disconnecting me from person. Years ago, society didn't have all these issues.
Yeah, I was joking. I'm pretty sure it's not good for anyone besides shareholders. If TW was willing to sell off their cable division to be eligible for this merger, I'm pretty sure they have something even bigger and more evil in mind. I think Southwestern Bell bought the original AT&T some years ago and they kept the name and stock symbol. But since that was one of the 'baby bells' from the break up, I guess it can be considered the same company.
The only good thing about all this merger madness is that Disney is slowly getting back all the pieces of Marvel Comics under one roof. They got the Hulk back from Universal and Spidey back from Sony, now the Fox purchase brings the Xmen and Fantastic 4. It'd be nice to see all of them in one movie at least once, even if it's only short cameo appearances.
When I was doing housecalls for computer service, my customers who had Intenet troubles, mail problems, outages, etc. were most often AT&T. I found it to be horrible service. They may have been a good landwire company 60 years ago but times have changed and the giant seems to be unable to move quickly enough to swat the bugs in their new systems.
I used to have a lot of problems with that but now I've got an aerial that works well here. The problem I had was that the sound used to cut out for a few seconds every so often. I was watchig drama programmes with random lines of dialog edited out of them, on some shows that could be very confusing.
A little while ago a site I visit sometimes kept showing me banner ads for some sort of TV receiver that they said would let you watch lots of cable channels from an aerial for free. They said it was legal and you didn't have to pay a subscription, just buy the device. I think it was supposed to be based on some regulation that said the companies had to provide free broadcasts. It sounded very dodgy to me. I can't remember the name does anyone know about something like that?
No cable company is going to freely broadcast its subscription services, but local TV stations will have free broadcast signals that can be picked up with an antenna. In the US, by law, all TV broadcast is now digital. Any old analog TVs still around need a converter to take a digital antenna signal and convert it to an analog signal to input to the old TV. However, if you have a modern digital TV you can simply attach a good antenna designed to properly handle digital signals and if you have a strong enough signal in your area it should just simply work without any sort of converter box. But you're not going to get free programs from a subscription service.
I think I've seen some of those advertisments and yes, they seemed misleading. They're trying to make a big deal out of selling you something you may not need and won't do what they're trying to make you believe it says.
"Wizard's First Rule: People are stupid. They'll believe anything they want to believe or that they are afraid might be true." -- paraphrased from Terry Goodkind's "Wizard's First Rule"
I have to say in the 20+ yrs we've had this cable service we've never lost signal once. When we had Direct TV and Dish Network we always lost service because of the weather conditions or outages. Screwed up so many recordings its unbelievable.
I thought it sounded too good to be true.
TV broadcasts in the UK are all digital now as well. We went through a phase of using set top boxes on our analog TVs. My old analog set went wrong ages ago, I only use didgital ones now. What with digital broadcasts and HDMI video I wonder how long they will keep putting scart sockets on TVs. I still use old Atari 800 and Spectrum computers that need these inputs.
Here in Brazil there is the "sky cat" (where it connects 02 antennas in a single decoder, and this unlocks hundreds of paid channels)
I, a few days ago, always avoided going down this road.
My sister-in-law has a subscription plan, with an extra access point ... And I paid half the plan to use this extra point ...
Days ago, the TV operator released 01 year of free telecine (that package with 06 channels telecine) ... But that was only for the point of it, and the television plans operator said that it was a toast only to the point main ... I returned the access point, and decided to use this method that unlocks all paid channels, and use everything for free.
An update for this thread. Since I started this thread, I got a brand new tv and an antenna. I am thinking of saving up to get an amazon recast, but is there a cheaper dvr system that will work with an amazon basic antenna and a fire smart tv? Or is the recast the best way to go?
TIVO?
You will probably find the all Amazon solution and control a better option in the long run. I love voice command and Alexa and my automated lights.
If you want crappy service, try Comcast/Xfinity. Urgh.
I have a Roku. It's ok. I can watch Xfinity Stream on my tv still when the cable Xfinity is hiccupping (frequently). I have Hulu (not the live TV Hulu), Netflix and Amazon Prime. There is also DirectTV's new streaming service and YouTube TV....things are getting better for cord-cutters. As a disclaimer, I don't have Direct TV's streaming service or YouTube TV, so I can't vouch for those. Netflix and Hulu are ok. I can watch Mom on one and NCIS on the other...lol. I like Prime the least of the three, but with Prime comes the free shipping which is what I REALLY love. :P
Laurie
I've got an antenna from Monoprice that picks up every broadcast channel I'm aware of in the chicago area, I even get the PBS channel from Gary andI live on the NW side. Besides that I have Netflix and Amazon Prime. I wouldn't even have Prime but free shipping and the other stuff makes it worthwhile and Expanse is coming. I'm not really a sports guy but I know people who are have found services to stream NFL, MLB, NHL etc.
I have Amazon Prime, Hulu Live and Netflix. They are all good. I tried Youtube Tv for a month and it is also very good. Direct Tv is the absolute worst, you spend as much time waiting for the picture to load as you do watching it. Try https://www.cordcutters.com/ for great information, including an article on alternative services https://www.cordcutters.com/alternative-streaming-services-you-need-try-2019.
I have xfinity blast internet for $45.00 a month. I use all my own equipment . Allenart is correct they have the worst service but it is still the fastest internet. I was tired of paying Xfinity close to $20.00 a month for local tv and regional sports, both of which I get for free over my Mohu Leaf antenna. I have the antenna hooked up to a Hauppauge DVR and can record live TV direct to my computer hard drive. Check out http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/webstore2/index.htm.
Anything where you do not have to sign a contract. It is easy to get frustrated, but remeber the grass is not always greener. Test the water with your toe before diving in.
I never should have given up that flip phone and $20 dollar a month cell bill - LOL. If I die Verizon will go out of business almost as fast as Depends diapers goes out business if Hillary Clinton dies.
We are planning on ditching cable as soon as the Superbowl is over. I will keep Spectrum for the internet although I am actively exploring alternatives for that as well. I already have amazon prime, netflix and hulu, and am considering Sling Tv as an alternative. I am just tired of spending such a huge amount of money on mindless stuff. I got rid of dish a couple of years ago, I got tired of clmbing out of a second story window and using a broom to wipe off my dish every 20 minutes when it snowed. When Spectrum took over Time Warner, it went downhill in a matter of months. I can barely get wifi upstairs (worked find for years, then spectrum took over and its total sh**. I can''t even stream you tube on the upstairs tv it buffers so bad, and that's hardwired to the modem! Works fine downstairs. I'm jus done. there is an awful lot of other things I could be doing with an extra $100 or more a month.
Had just the opposite here when Spectrum took over TWC price went down about $30.00 and internet speed doubled went from reasonably good to really good.
Only problem is ther just isn't anything worth watching on TV
Other Than NCIS NCIS New Orleans an occasional movie I end up watching 40 year old reruns if I watch TV
also with Sp[ectrum..with the 200meg download...if your modem is old..get a new one. I noticed when they upgraded to 200. a lot of sites seemed slower. I called 3 times becasue of that but the internet speed tests indicated 200+, so they wouldn;t do anything. I downgraded again and got rid of the cable channels so had to bring my box back. While there , the customer service rep mentioned my modem. She goes, yes , we have been seeing slower performance with these and handed me a new one. I hooked it up and the speeds are crazy fast. ... fast fast.
I've been sitting here enjoying episodes of the old game show "What's My Line?" from 1952 with lots of long dead celebrities. And the people in the show are dead too.
