I know what you mean, unfortunately even though I know I'll end up saving money I couldn't spend that much in one go last month :-(

There are pro bundles I don't have... but if I bought them all, what would I get free with purchase of a new Genesis 9 figure?

    20% off free. devil

  • davesodaveso Posts: 7,918

well..yikes.. i bought 2 new items... 1 PA item ... 11 items from that category 70% off..which included 3 bundles packages ... Mei Lin 6 Pro .. for like $7. Mei Lin 6 bonus bundle, and Lee 6 Karate bundle ...
6 free items popped up while I was starring at my cart for 6 hours .....
$68 ... about 18 more than i wanted to spend, but that Hanoi Dress and that Lace Blouse were too much to pass on. I think they look very cool.

BUT .. i could have purchased 3 pairs of cheap jeans..real life stuff, and a salad for lunch ... whatever.

Damn, my third pro bundle tonight (Edward, Alexendra, Penny)!

There's still five in the sale I don't own... Gotta catch them all (or I should be drinking less vodka at 3am!)

Gift cards are all about preplanning, but unfortunately if your monthly allowance/budget is limited, you only have so much to work with.

You just need to tell yourself 'It'll go on sale again someday, I don't need it right this minute'

It's a nice theory anyways.  Some sales are just too good to pass up!

I WAS going to take this week off from sales, but the shinies were just too tempting... fortunately I banked a lot of credit in the last two months, but it's dwindling more quickly than I would like.

Just remember to keep a small pool together for the next gift card sale, so you can slowly work towards keeping enough credit banked via gift card purchases in reserve to cover this sort of stuff... it's all about stretching that budget!

Well I finally got my first ever PRO BUNDLE! Woohoo, LOL

Funny how the timing was perfect, I have a project where I need the male genitals and low and behold a pro bundle sale, LOL I went with Owen because I already have the base and HD addons for Edward and Michael 8 and while i wanted the Floyd morph, the rest of the bundle was useless for me. The Owen bundle had more clothing options that are actually very useful for what I have been working on lately and with a coupon was just under $35, so that is well worth it iMO, thanks DAZ!

Damn, now I can never say I have never bought a Pro bundle before, aw man..sad

Claiming you own only one is imo better; bought one you liked, but can show restraint. :p

restraint ... what does that mean ?

it means, turn off the computer, go outside, breath in the fresh air, see the birds and other little critter scamper about. Go take a walk, stop and smell the roses, say hi to your fellow man....................then go back inside and make some badass 3d imagery, LOL

At least this will take you away from the store for a little while, LOL

It's funny, my apt has a sweet courtyard with a nice size lake and lots of trees. last week I took my tablet with me and sat down in the shade and opened up DS and started working in the midst of nature. A couple walked by and asked what I was doing. When I told then working on PC graphics on my tablet, they gave me crap, saying it was a beautiful day out and I was looking at a electronic screen instead. I took offense at first, but they were right. It;s nice to be unplugged from the world for a little while.

Wait, how are you using DS on a tablet???

No NVidia GPU, only Intel CPU... Technically it's a hybrib with a magnetically attached keyboard which you really need connected to use Daz.  I can set up and render simple scenes, such as single character studio type scenes as I only have 2GB RAM, HDRI lighting makes rendering bearable!

    No NVIDIA.

I use my Surface 2 Pro for setting up figures, environments while I'm commuting. I also do post-render work with a digital pen, or sometimes just my fingertips. Texture work in GIMP, working in Ren'Py or Comic Life or whatever output I want to use Daz renders in.

Yeah, I can render on my Surface, but I don't do complex work. Pinups or test shots only.

(My Surface 2 Pro is 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. I also have a 128GB MicroSD card and a slim 64GB USB memory chip for storage)

My Surface Pro 3 is i5, 2GB RAM, 128GB SSD so the RAM is the bottleneck I find! It's still a great little machine for the stuff I mentioned above, but really good for modern scripted languages on the go (nodejs, python)... I wouldn't want to kick off a large C++ or Java build though LOL

BTW, the Surface Pro 3 came out in June 2014!

My 16GB RAM CPU only laptop usually took overnight just to render one character pinup! Now I have a huge thing with a 1081 ti but only 16GB RAM and it's still not as fast as I thought. Actually it sometimes finishes pretty quickly but it's not done. I have to put it at max samples and 100% to get it to finish and it can still take up to an hour just for one dressed character with clothes and hair for around 2400x2000. Not sure if that is normal.

Yeah, I got a really good deal on a refurbished Surface Pro 2... I knew I wanted a Surface, but they get really pricey in a hurry. I keep an eye on refurbished stuff for my personal gear because I don't need bleeding edge for my hobbyist work.

It's just hard to replace a Surface as a portable. The Surface is thick and heavy compared to my iPad Air, but it can do so much more.

I learned Daz on an HP X360 2 in 1 laptop, with AMD graphics.  The graphics were no help with rendering (they did help with the viewport though), but I still managed to do dozens of renders on that thing before upgrading to the monster 'desktop replacement' laptop I have now.

The nice thing about the 2 in 1 is that I could use it as a tablet, or simply fold the keyboard around and use it as a laptop.  At 13.3" it was very conveniently sized, and a bit bigger than the 'work issued' Ipad I was using before.  After going to said 2 in 1, I've never seriously wanted to go back to the Ipad, although they did release Ascendancy on Ipad briefly, which made me briefly consider getting one.  Kinda silly to buy an Ipad for just one game though, plus DOSBox works well enough with the DOS version of Ascendancy that  I still own.

Plus, having an actual keyboard (vs. a software/touchscreen or add-on one) was quite nice.  I'm old school that way I guess... plus I could use the touchscreen keyboard if I didn't want to bother folding the physical keyboard around, but to be honest, I probably used it in 'tablet' mode only around 5% of the time... The keyboard clamshell also made for a very nice tablet stand (no need for a kickstand).

Anyways, IMHO those 2 in 1's really are the best of both worlds, and the slightly larger screen is actually quite nice to have over a regular tablet.  There's a 15" version too, and they do make versions of those with Nvidia graphics.

I do highly recommend upgrading to an SSD if the 2 in 1 has a HDD (helps battery life).  I also upgraded mine (DIY) to 16GB of ram (the max available for my model).  I was a bit worried about taking it apart to upgrade the HDD and Ram, but it wasn't as scary as I thought it might be.

I'm currently limited to my surface or a laptop with a nvidia GT640M so not really able to do complex scenes, mostly learning to pose and/or set up lighting.  The Surface s fast enought to do simply modeling to in Hexagon (grabbed the 64 bit release recently as even with only 2GB of RAM a 64 bit app will use less memory if WoW can be unloaded!)

Agreed, pretty nice little machines as long as you don't expect it to replace a desktop (I know of people who expected the Surface Pro to have desktop class performance!)

I find it an amazing  machine for drafting ideas, going through UDemy courses, and streaming games from my XBox One X ;-)

Depends on the scene content I guess. Are you using dForce? Edit: forgot dForce doesn't affect render time.

I have a 1070 and 8 GB RAM, and renders with 1 character with clothes and hair rarely take over 15 minutes. Haven't used dForce yet at all so I can't compare.

Just did a 3000x2000 test of a render with a 200 MB HDRI. Pretty dark so I guess it should take a bit longer than normal.  Looks finished to me after about 15 minutes. I'm linking to it instead of uploading as the forum recompresses images which reduces the quality.

..the scenes I create would probably cause it to melt into a puddle of silicon and plastic.

2 GB of memory? Wow, I'm surprised Daz 4.x even works on it. On my old 32 bit notebook, Daz 4 routinely crashed even when rendering fairly simple scenes. .

Now if the tablet had a wireless connection to your desktop system, then it would make more sense as t would effectively since it wold be regarded as a  a "dumb terminal".

That does not sound correct, and I am guessing the shortage of RAM could be the issue. On my box with 32 GB (also with a single 1080Ti) a single clothed character renders fully (ie no grain etc left) in around 5 minutes, often less. Naturally it depends a lot on how the scene is set up and lit.

not overspend? not buy the things you don't really need right now, since there will always be another sale?

This. Early this year I had to make some serious cuts to my spending, and 3d content is the area I made the biggest cut. I realized that I haven't used most of the content in my runtime, and it makes no sense to buy something just because it looks neat, or I might use it someday. I've had to focus on what I want to do with DAZ Studio (illustrations for my stories) and assess what I already have that suits my needs. I don't really have much free time lately, so I haven't even explored iRay much, and haven't tried dForce at all. I really need to learn to use the tools I already have; after that, I'll know better what I need that I don't have or can't make for myself.

That may be normal if the character has subdivision turned up and is indoors with only a few sparse lights for illumination. @Wonderland, it also depends on what you consider finished. Are you waiting until DS says it's done, or are you waiting until the image looks good to you? Do you have a desktop w/ 1080ti installed or is it a laptop w/ an external 1080ti in an enclosure?
